classical music - andante - sir john eliot gardiner's electrifying haydn
The English Baroque Soloists don't often perform in England anymore in these financially difficult times, and in recent years their founder and director, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, has spent more time guest-conducting Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bruckner and Stravinsky (although the year 2000 was, of course, an exception to the rule, with the notorious Bach Cantata Pilgrimage).
Therefore, an all-Haydn program with the English Baroque Soloists at St. John's Smith Square was a precious chance for a London audience to hear Gardiner returning to the Enlightenment.
The first impressions of the concert were reassuringly brilliant — the English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir may have plenty of close rivals in Bach and Handel these days, but they continue to knock spots off their colleagues in Viennese classical repertoire.
