		Lawrence Alma Tadema (born Laurens Tadema) was Dutch, and only came to England when in his mid-30s, in 1869.
		Alma Tadema is the archetypical Classicist painter, and at his peak rivalled Leighton in reputation.
		Alma Tadema had many followers and imitators, the best of them such as John William Waterhouse, John Collier and the American Elihu Vedder developing the classical themes in their own way.

		Bisschop's father had died when the boy was young, and as with Lawrence, his mother's acquiescence to her son's wishes to become an artist was deterred by strong-willed godfathers; both boys seemed condemned to take up mundane professions.

		Born Lourens Tadema (Alma being his middle name) in Dronryp, Friesland, to Pieter Tadema, a notary, and his second wife Hinke Brouwer - from an early age he showed some artistic ability and the beginnings of his highly methodical and exacting nature as demonstrated in his paintings to follow.
		So fascinated was he by the Roman remains with their preponderance of marble that, within a few years, ancient Roman subject matter came to the fore in his work.
		The Tademas soon moved to Paris where Lourens entered into a long-term contract with the well-known art dealer Ernest Gambart, an influential man with connections throughout Europe.

		Alma-Tadema, Sir Lawrence (1836 - 1912), few artists enjoyed the success that the Dutch-born painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema achieved in the United Kingdom with his studies of semi-nudes, which were set against a background of daily life in ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt.
