SIEMENS, SIR WILLIAM [KARL WILHELM] (1823-1883), British inventor, engineer and natural philosopher, was born at Lenthe in Hanover on the 4th of April 1823.
In electricity Siemens's name is closely associated with the growth of land and submarine telegraphs, the invention and development of the dynamo, and the application of electricity to lighting and to locomotion.
In the Siemens electric furnace the intensely hot atmosphere of the electric arc between carbon points is employed to melt refractory metals.

Heroes of the Telegraph - CHAPTER V. - CHARLES WILLIAM SIEMENS.
Siemens had been trained as a mechanical engineer, and, although he became an eminent electrician in later life, his most important work at this early stage was non-electrical; indeed, the greatest achievement of his life was non-electrical, for we must regard the regenerative furnace as his MAGNUM OPUS.
Siemens endeavoured to render this difference visible by means of mercury contained in a chamber having a bottom extremely sensitive to the pressure of the mercury upon it, and resembling in some respects the vacuous chamber of an aneroid barometer.
Siemens was able to produce a great variety of electrical instruments for measuring and other auxiliary purposes, all of which bear the name of his firm, and have proved exceedingly useful in a practical sense.

 Ernst Werner von Siemens Summary
Siemens is credited with having worked out the principle underlying the new type of generator: a rotating coil inside a stationary coil, both forming a single circuit connected to the external consumer circuit.
Siemens called this scheme of a self-excited generator the "dynamo electrical principle." Its formulation, presented to the Academy of Science on January 17, 1867, and subsequent demonstration of the electric light from the dynamo-machine moved through a steam-machine at the factory side in Markgrafenstrasse, Berlin, laid the groundwork for the modern technology of electric generators.
Siemens is also the father of the trolleybus which he initially tried and tested with his "Elektromote" on April 29, 1882.

Siemens History Site - Founder generation
Werner von Siemens, an inventor and visionary businessman, lent significant impetus to the still-young field of electrical engineering in the second half of the nineteenth century, and played a key role in fostering the development of the electrical industry.
In 1866 Werner von Siemens discovered the dynamo-electric principle, probably his most significant achievement in electrical engineering, which helped establish the idea that electricity could be used as a power source.
Halske was particularly involved in the construction and design of electrical equipment such as the press which enabled wires to be insulated with a seamless coat of gutta-percha, the pointer telegraph and the morse telegraph and measuring instruments.

Siemens was established in the middle of the last century (one of the founding brothers, Sir William Siemens, took British nationality, and won fame for inventing street lighting -- in Godalming, Surrey).
The CEO of Siemens at the time, perhaps taking his analogy from French fromagenous diversity ('How can you govern a country with 200 different cheeses?') wondered how the 200 different internal systems within Siemens and SNI could be harmonised: the answer was 'with difficulty', and it took 16 months to merge the order-processing systems.
