A saga of stupidity and poor judgment | Books | Arts | Telegraph
Dalley is not, however, much interested in what she calls "this bidding-war of numbers"; what concerns her is the mythology that grew up around what was really a minor incident in the annals of warfare, and the effect this mythology had on Britain's subsequent involvement in India.
She rightly describes the events that led to the hot-tempered Siraj marching upon the badly fortified British enclave of Calcutta as a "saga of stupidity and poor judgment" on both sides.
Siraj almost certainly had no idea that his troops were cramming prisoners into a tiny cell, but through Holwell's account he became a byword for oriental barbarism, and this in turn excused his assassination after Calcutta had been recaptured by commander-in-chief Robert Clive, and the eventual imposition of British rule on a nation of "savages".

Accordingly, Robert was negotiating with two potential contenders, one of Siraj's generals, Yar Latif Khan, and Siraj's grand-uncle and army chief, Mir Jafar Ali Khan, through William Watts, chief of the Kasimbazar factory of the Company, who was proficient in Bengali, and Persian languages.

It is clear that the survivors were not treated with any brutality and their incarceration, indeed, had not been an act of wanton cruelty so much as an example of crass stupidity: they were let out on Siraj's orders as soon as he heard what had happened overnight.
Eventually they were set free and Holwell, 45 at the time of the tragedy, died at Pinner in Middlesex after reaching the age of 87, which was pretty good going in any circumstances in the 18th century.
Siraj, of course, was made to pay for his insolence when Robert Clive demolished his army at Plassey and in doing so announced the effective start of the British Indian empire, to replace what had hitherto been merely a colony of aggressive entrepreneurs let loose by London.

At Fort William, Siraj's warriors quickly gathered up a group of 146 Europeans and shoved them into what has been described as a small, airless dungeon - a veritable fl hole.
The phrase itself - "Black Hole" - was a term commonly used (derisively of course) by the British to indicate a military "holding facility." The dimensions of the room have been recorded as being a mere 18 feet long by 14 feet, 10 inches wide.
The bulk of Siraj's main army deserted him, led off the field by his own "traitorous" great-uncle, Mir Jafar.

On the day of the Battle of Plassey, Siraj-Ud-Daulah faced off against the British, apparently with overwhelming force, but at the critical time Mir Jafar's men stood watching passively while the soldiers of Siraj-Ud-Daula were decimated by the smaller but much better armed British forces.
After Siraj Ud Daulah’s defeat and subsequent execution, Mir Jafar achieved his long-pursued dream of gaining the throne, and was propped up by the British as puppet Nawab.
