Sirmaur is one of the lesser known areas of Himachal, and at the time I visited, in November, one of it's most beautiful.
As is the case with most hill states, the history of Sirmaur is a tapestry of valour, deceit and romance.
Sirmaurs later survival as a state under the Sikh raj, perhaps hinged on this fact.

The ruler of Sirmaur (Nahan) at that time was Raja Karam Prakash, youngest and third son of Raj Kirat who during his reign had extended the boundaries of his kingdom up to Nogli-ka-Khala near Rampur, Shimla, Nikral-ka-Gad in Garhwal and Kiratpur, near Pinjore.
The Sirmaur forces were led by Garrison Commander Kanwar Kishan Singh, a cousin of the Raja of Sirmaur.
Besides Sirmaur, Nepalese ruler Amar Singh Thappa also conquered Nalagarh, Bilaspur, Mandi, Chamba and Kangra, which he governed on the behalf of the ruler of Nepal from 1809 to 1814.

Renewal of the mining lease by the government, they alleged, would be patently wrong and against the rights of the villagers.

The proposal to slash the proposed 100 per cent hike in sales tax is aimed at averting a direct confrontation with mine-holders and nearly 11,000 persons engaged directly and indirectly in the mining business.
Entire mining activities in Sirmaur district have remained paralysed since August 3 last after the state Assembly had passed a bill authorising the government to raise the sales tax.
