Sisal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sisal or sisal hemp is an agave Agave sisalana that yields a stiff fiber used in making rope.
Sisals are sterile hybrids of uncertain origin; although shipped from the port of Sisal in Yucatán (thus the name), they do not actually grow in Yucatán, the plantations cultivating henequen (Agave fourcroydes) instead.
In the 19th century, sisal cultivation (the plant being propagated via offsets), was spread worldwide, from Florida to the Caribbean islands and Brazil, as well as to countries in Africa, notably Tanzania and Kenya, and Asia.

 The Sisal Plant
The sisal plant has a 7-10 year life-span (longer in Mexico where growth is slower) and is usually cut first after 2-3 years and then at 6-12 month intervals.
In East Africa, where sisal is produced on an estate basis, the leaves are in the main transported to a central decortication plant after which the fibre is dried, brushed and baled - for export or for use in the domestic mills.
East African sisal, being washed and decorticated, is considered to be superior in quality to Brazilian sisal (although the latter is more than adequate for the manufacture of agricultural twines and general cordage and is used domestically in craft paper production) and, in normal times, commands a significant price premium on the world market.

Sisal Rugs and Sisal Carpets are a great choice when you are looking for options to redecorate or give a fresh look to any room.
Sisal plants produce a fiber which is stronger than many other common fibers such as flax, hemp, and jute.
The fibers of sisal natural floor coverings are often left undyed, so they take their color from the plant from which they are made.

Sisal produces the longest and strongest natural plant fibres, hence the longest and strongest ropes, everything from the largest ropes to tie battle ships to docks to twine for boxes.
The Sisal industry reached its peak during this period exporting 200,000 tons in 1958; thereafter nationalization, mismanagement and the rise of synthetics to replace natural fibres destroyed the Sisal, which today is about 8 per cent of 1958.

Sisal, which is not indigenous to Africa, was introduced into Tanganyika (now mainland Tanzania) from Mexico at the end of 19th century.
Sisal accounts for two-thirds of world production of hard fibres, and about three quarters of sisal consumption is for agricultural twine.
In East Africa, sisal grows under diverse ecological conditions ranging from the hot humid coastal region to the cooler and drier areas in the hinterland.

Thus, SISAL is really a fancy C (or Fortran) preprocessor, which means that it is quite portable, in nonparallelizing form to architectures with a good C compiler, such as gcc.
SISAL wouldn't compile on Linux at the time but the problems turned out to be relatively trivial, so with the help of Pat Miller at LLNL, we ported SISAL to Linux.
The SISAL project represents a relatively rare event in recent times, namely a significant effort to focus the talents of computer scientists on an issue of real importance to physical scientists and engineers.

The Potential Market for Sisal and Henequen Geotextiles
As a pointer to the potential of sisal it may be helpful to examine the requirements made of the geotextile in the current area of use of other natural fibre geotextiles.
It would be expected that sisal erosion control geotextiles could compete with other types and in the applications of un-paved roads/separators sisal's apparent durability may prove to be a great advantage compared with jute and coir and may even oust synthetics in some applications.
If sisal suppliers can improve on the services offered by the manufacturers of synthetics and at a more economic cost then sisal could start to make serious inroads into this mass market which is growing at a spectacular rate.
