Sisal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sisal or sisal hemp is an agave Agave sisalana that yields a stiff fiber used in making rope.
Sisals are sterile hybrids of uncertain origin; although shipped from the port of Sisal in Yucatán (thus the name), they do not actually grow in Yucatán, the plantations cultivating henequen (Agave fourcroydes) instead.
In the 19th century, sisal cultivation (the plant being propagated via offsets), was spread worldwide, from Florida to the Caribbean islands and Brazil, as well as to countries in Africa (especially Tanzania) and Asia.

Agave (qv.) is a member of the order Amaryllidaceae; and a well-known species of the genus, A gave americana, the century plant, will suggest the habit of the sisal hemp, which, however, differs in the absence of prickles along the margin of the fleshy leaf.
After six or seven years the flowering stalk or pole develops from the centre of the leaf-cluster, and grows to the height of Il or 20 ft. The flowers are borne in dense clusters at the ends of short lateral branches, and closely resemble those of A gave americana.
It is known as the false sisal hemp, and can at once be distinguished from true sisal by its spiny leaf-margin.
