Sonic Youth's second album, Bad Moon Rising (1985), was a result of a death obsession of the band's, specifically images of death in American culture.
Sonic Youth, although not a traditional punk band, does have punk attributes and have been influenced by punk bands and genres.

 * Dusted Reviews - Sonic Youth *
What makes Sonic Youth exceptional is that they have managed, over and over again, during the twenty-plus years of their existence, to produce unique, groundbreaking music that still manages to satisfy on baser, more primitive levels.
Sonic Youth has referred to the album’s creation as “incorporating the textures of recent (overt) avant-garde explorations into a ragingly populist framework”, and this is as good a description as any for the music contained within Murray Street.
Sonic Youth doesn’t confront any of this because they don’t need to, nor would they find it appropriate (I think) to try to make sense of any of this in their music.

Sonic Youth: Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo (vocals, guitar); Kim Gordon (vocals, bass); Steve Shelley (drums).
With SISTER, Sonic Youth moved even further from the self-conscious punk rock that marred their first releases, SONIC YOUTH (1982) and CONFUSION IS SEX (1983).
It possesses that old school sonic flavor that I, as a huge fan, love so much.

Amy Phillips's review of Sonic Youth's new album, Murray Street, in last week's issue, in which she proposed that the group break up, prompted a large reader response.
First, the author criticizes Sonic Youth for changing their sound radically from what it was in 1995, and then for not changing their sound since 1986.

TorrentBox.com - Torrent details for "Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation [1988]"
By refining the song-oriented breakthroughs of Sister and developing their fascination with noise and alternate tunings, Sonic Youth created a masterpiece of post-punk art rock with the double-album Daydream Nation.
Though the self-conscious sprawl of the album might appear self-indulgent on the surface, Daydream Nation is powered by a sustained vision, one that encapsulates all of the group's quirks and strengths.
The essential New York rock band of the post-punk era, Sonic Youth care as much about the quasi-symphonic, microtonal art-guitar music of composers like Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca as they do about the rock-song form, and with Daydream Nation, they struck their greatest balance between the two.

Sonic Youth: Sister ---Ink Blot Magazine
Known primarily as a noisy, experimental, primal punk/art-rock band through the early 1980's, Sonic Youth finally hunkered down and set their minds on a far simpler task for this effort.
From the album's first cut, "Schizophrenia," through its last, "White Cross," the course of this album moves with a fluid rhythm kept in time by syncopated harmony anchored by steady drumming.
Though a staple for Sonic Youth, on this record they use the soft, warm sound as a base from which each of the song's emotions flower.

Prindle Record Reviews - Sonic Youth
The Sonic Youth were easily one of the most innovative and influential bands of the 80's, sort of a modern-day Velvet Underground, and this album is the best reason for that legacy.
Sonic Youth's comments on pop culture, organized religion, politics, arena rock, street life, relationships, and child molesters, as poetic and Lou Reed-ish as they are, kinda get buried in their wash of warm fuzzy catchy guitar sound.
Sonic Youth is also able to write songs with more than one dynamic, which is rare for a rock band.

Sonic Youth: Dirty [Deluxe Edition] - PopMatters Music Review
So, late last year, when it was announced that Sonic Youth would be getting the deluxe treatment, it was impossible not to get excited.
Although Daydream Nation is easily their best album from that period, and of their career, the three other albums, 1987's Sister, 1990's Goo, and Dirty, while not quite as perfect at that one album, still rank as essential Sonic Youth recordings.
Though many fans saw the album as a shallow attempt to break into the whole grunge movement, which was at its peak in 1992, the fact is, they were merely going back to playing more simple garage rock, while still maintaining their feedback-laced signature sound.

Of course in retrospect, all those albums are great, and I love them all, but at the time it was really hard for me to get into them at all because of my love of early Sonic Youth.

Through their music and actions, Sonic Youth has tested all music boundaries and manipulated the rock industry in ways that display a punk experience in a nontraditional way.
The album was very dark compared to early work, and was not received favorably by many critics, which helped to ostracize them from the New York hardcore scene.
Sonic Youth used its influences to help new postpunk bands of the 1990s get record contracts from these labels, the most significant one being Nirvana's signing with Geffen records in 1991.

"Sister" was Sonic Youth's fifth album, and their second consecutive album with the same drummer performing on all tracks.
It's on this track that Thurston and Kim first trade verses, and that's just one of several sonic firsts on this LP (also including use of acoustic guitar for melodic purposes, use of a Moog synthesizer, and the return of Thurston on bass for the first time since "Confusion Is Sex").
The album was released in June (simultaneously on all formats) on SST in the US and Blast First in the UK (same as EVOL), at which point SY began their European tour, expanding the back repertoire a bit but primarily focusing on the new material (a pattern which SY have rarely strayed from).

Instead of distilling their weakness for experimental trash into noise-rock that sounds like a million bucks, they apply their skill at major-label compromise to their eternal propensity for experimental trash.
After all this time, they know what they're doing when they fuck around, and their long-evolving rock and roll groove breaks down only when they have something better to do--there's nothing aleatory, accidental, or incompetent about it.
Anyway, usually the groove holds; this is no Sister because it moves when it means to.

Sonic Youth: EVOL ---Ink Blot Magazine
Gordon and Moore reveal their obssession with morbid themes of death, murder and violence on haikus like "In the Kingdom #19" through detached, menacing oratory.
The skeletal plucking of "Shadow of a Doubt," and the decidedly metallic "Green Light," with its furious whirl of guitar noise, explore the controlled chaos the band are capable of, but it's the singable bits than shine through and give the album its sonic adhesive.
Once this style had been found and exhausted on Daydream Nation, Sonic Youth could comfortably begin to deconstruct these ideas with new-found conviction and produce more recent beauts like Experimental Jet-Set, Trash and No Star.
