That act, passed in 2004, extends almost all the rights of marriage to unrelated, same-sex partners, including the right to avoid inheritance taxes in the event of the death of one partner.
That last bit is key since if their lawsuit (and one of the sisters' health) fails, the survivor will be forced to sell the house they designed, built and lived in together for 41 years, leaving her homeless.

In watching Sister Act again recently, there was a particular scene that reminded me of the power of the clericals -- the thugs in the final chase refused to shoot Delores because she was dressed as a nun; they couldn't shoot, in case she was a nun.
When Delores arrives at the convent, it is as much of a culture shock to her as she is to the culture of the convent, especially as that is envisioned and embodied by the Reverend Mother (played astutely by Maggie Smith).
Sister Act has to be one of those classic films that has to some out every year at Christmas when you've got the family round.

I managed to get her to open her mouth and saw, through the snot and saliva and tears and blood, that one of her loose teeth was now hanging at an odd angle.
My other two sisters were 6 and 8 years older than I was and always at different boarding schools, so my envy and admiration of them was less emotional.
I don’t even know if they did, although they had to be a little jealous of my place in my father’s heart, if only because it made him that much easier to tolerate.
