[KFCC] Tale of Two Sisters, A Review
This kind of movie is also perfect for multiple viewing as there are a lot of subtle hints and suggestions in the movie that you might not catch the first time.
It is really fascinating to discover the intricacies of the two sisters and their relationships with both themselves, and their parents.
The English sub are also of excellent quality, except that they didn’t translate the writing in the movie, such as the paper sheet that Su-mi find in her room.

Reeling: the Movie Review Show's review of The Magdalene Sisters
Until the last one was closed in 1996 the Magdalene Convents were scattered throughout Catholic Ireland and their sole purpose was to house the outcast girls of Papist society, committing them to a life of grueling work, deprivation, humiliation and unhappiness.
"The Magdalene Sister" is an earnest indictment against a Church system that indentured thousands of women and subjected them to long, hard days of scrubbing laundry for the local businesses, earning money for the sisters but getting none of it in return for their back breaking labors.
"The Magdalene Sisters" may be criticized for beating the Church when it's down but the heartfelt honesty of the work, the fine performances and deft crafting make this a must for the socially conscious.

The Banger Sisters (2002) Movie Review
In the character of Suzette, a past-50 former groupie who is still desperately holding on to her old life and her old sexuality even as she is finally learning that she is becoming obsolete, Hawn taps in on a depth of emotion and pain that makes it obvious this role has touched her deeply.
Lavinia's perfect existence becomes complicated when free-spirited Suzette blows back into her life after twenty years apart, and Lavinia is forced to confront the wild past that she has hidden for so long from her husband (Robin Thomas) and daughters (Erika Christensen and Sarandon's real-life daughter Eva Amurri).
You also have to give The Banger Sisters credit that it is the very rare film that will actually seriously look at the sexuality of two women who are over 50 without making a gross Farrelly Brothers joke of it.

Sisters Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Sisters borrows heavily from various Hitchcock films in its tale of conjoined twins, one of whom is a murderer.
The biggest problem is that Sisters can't help but pale in comparison to David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers (also a Criterion release), which depicts the psychosis of twins much more profoundly and effectively.
There are constant references to Sisters' "SHOCK RECOVERY PERIOD," a gimmick suggested by the studio to have viewers remain in their seats after the movie ended in order to compose themselves after the "terrifying" ending.

But the movie ultimately goes the safe route, even as it emphasizes that the suburbanite has a lot more to learn from the free spirit than the other way around.
Also, for a movie rooted in the contrast between late-60s hedonism and idealism and todays corporate, overcommercialized culture, the 60s flavor is awfully faint, with an overload of Doors references and a soundtrack thats all over the place.
The movies still a lot of fun, with an undeniable energy sparked by two actresses in their 50s working at the peak of their powers.

The Magdalene Sisters - Movie Review - Stylus Magazine
An eccentric, elderly woman named Katy (Britta Smith) was kept in the asylum so long that she took it upon herself to act as something of a spy for the sisters, eventually programmed to view her captors with the sort of terrified admiration that military underlings often feel toward their superiors.
When Magdalene head Sister Bridget (Geraldine McEwan) is informed that Katy has just died, she offhandedly, glibly remarks, "May she rest in peace," without the slightest hint of any emotion.
The Magdalene Sisters is, first and foremost, a fiery polemic, never allowing itself to devolve into the “triumph of the human spirit” cliches that could have probably made for an easier movie for audiences to sit through but would have terminally compromised Mullan’s intent.

Rose (Dorothy Duffy), Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff), and Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone) are three Irish girls growing up in the early 1960s, and they share a common flaw: they’ve sinned (either through pregnancies out of wedlock or being a victim of rape) or have thought about sinning, much to the shame of their families.
Much like last year’s “Rabbit-Proof Fence,” “The Magdalene Sisters” is a true story account of a corner of history most audiences aren’t aware of.
The events have been fictionalized and the dramatics heightened for cinematic purposes, but the intense heat of reality is there, and “Magdalene” kicks down the doors and lets a little direct sunlight in on this chapter of disturbing Irish Catholic history.

Two teenage sisters, Im Su-Jeong (in a dramatically commanding performance) and the meek Mun Geun-Yeoung arrive at their father’s opulent countryside home after a stint in some kind of psychiatric hospital.
In this way, A Tale of Two Sisters succeeds in keeping the character’s anxiety alive even to the end of the movie and through the dénouement, which keeps the horror just a touch on our side of reality, capable of haunting you even several days after leaving the theatre.

A worldwide hit upon its release and based on an old Korean fairy tale; two sisters (wonderfully played by Su-jeong Lim and Geun-yeong Mun) come to live with their cold and distant father and turn-on-a-dime stepmother in a house where nothing is as it seems.
Something strange is happening when Su-mi and her younger sister, Su-yeon, come home to their fathers large but dark and somewhat foreboding house after a stay in the hospital.
The relationships of these people - the resentful and protective older sister, the concerned but frustrated father, the cold and jealous stepmother- are in the forefront of the narrative, not secondary to the horror.

Still a cute and curvy hardy partier decades after her backstage banging days were over, saucy, effervescence Suzette may be a free spirit, but she's also flat broke.
Even within its fairly fresh concept, the rest of "The Banger Sisters" is far more predictable, especially when it comes to the conflicts that arise in Lavinia's family once she rediscovers her wild side.
Focused on being funny, Dolman slap-dashes together an absurdly instantaneous resolution of her husband's disapproval and her daughters' shock without confrontation or consequences, robbing the picture of a potentially rich source of additional comedy.

Magdalene Sisters -- movie review by Dan Maguire
The Magdalene Sisters personalizes the horror that befell as many as 30,000 women imprisoned in laundries run by nuns under conditions that constituted torture and unending debasement.
The poet Alexander Pope said “the worst of madmen is a saint gone mad.” The real demon of the laundries’ tragedy is the poison poured into Western culture by the Christian horror of sex and sexual pleasure — and those roots are deep.
And in the maledominated Christian history, women, especially attractive women, were to be blamed for the blight of sexual pleasure and its relentless draw.

The Magdelene Sisters - which was inspired by the Channel 4 documentary 'Sex In A Cold Climate' - tells a harrowing tale that deserves to be heard.
At the outset, as Mullan swiftly sets the story in motion, Margaret (Duff) is seen being raped by her cousin; Bernadette (Noone) is merely attracting the attentions of the local boys, while Rose (Duffy) has just given birth to a baby boy out of wedlock.
Living in dorms with signs like "God is Good" above their beds, they are subjected to a series of dreadful experiences at the hands of the nuns - from corporal punishment to verbal abuse.
