This is the origin of the congregation of Sisters of Notre Dame, whose mother-house is at Coesfield, and who have large schools in Cleveland, Ohio, Covington, and other cities of the Middle West.
Upon Sister Louise, another of the original group, devolved in 1845 the charges of superiority not only of the house of Cincinnati, but also of the others then founded or to be founded east of the Rocky Mountains.
Through the initiative of Father Buggenoms the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, a community in the Diocese of Northampton, about fifty in number, were affiliated in 1852 to the Institute of Notre Dame, with the consent of the Bishop of Namur and Northampton.

About Notre Dame, the Baltimore Sunday Herald wrote, "Few institutions of learning are better known throughout this country than Notre Dame of Maryland, the famous college for women and preparatory school for girls under the supervision and instruction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame." The article, published August 28, 1900, included considerable praise.
At Notre Dame and in Catholic schools nationwide, lay teachers started to outnumber religious faculty because fewer men and women were choosing religious life, and many of those who had were leaving their orders.
