Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind
Perhaps this is because his music is closely related to the country-western spirit, and he feels akin to the land.
When Lightfoot sings about traveling or love, he is not really describing the plastic world of today's young people, but a nostalgic one of candy apples, diesel trucks, and trains.
"Sit Down Young Stranger" is a graceful, introspective ballad.

Come and sit by the river with me for a while And I'll tell you a story that's true Of when I was a boy playing here on the shore And the grass was so green and the water so blue 2.
Many years I have watched this river flow Rolling down from the hills to the ocean I have seen the waters high almost fast and rushing by I have seen it nearly dry and without motion 5.
Now at last you can see what it has come to So we've prospered but poisoned the waters Now the tunes have all been played and the piper must be paid Not by us but our sons and daughters Ch.

The album proceeds, he explains, into "the very real stuff which deals with both nature and life in general." Following the title track, "On Yonge Street" depicts Toronto's main drag which is 500 miles long and actually runs all the way to Manitoba.
By the time he graduated high school he had taught himself to play guitar and had written his first song; shortly thereafter he became a mainstay in the Toronto folk music scene, and was a featured performer on Canadian television.
The Way I Feel and Did She Mention My Name consolidated the artist's undoubted promise, but it was not until 1970 that he made a significant commercial breakthrough with Sit Down Young Stranger.
