 Siuslaw
To replace their lost women, Siuslaw men reportedly went south seeking wives among the Umpquas, because that tribe was 'most like the Siuslaws.' It was also said that at sometime before the middle of the nineteenth century, Siuslaw women introduced the practice of flattening the heads of their infants.
After it closed on September 3, 1859, the Siuslaws were marched northward from their homelands to the Yachats River, where the Alsea Subagency was established in 1861.
The Siuslaws among the latter group settled along the Siuslaw River in the Florence, Oregon, area.

A Watershed Assessment for the Siuslaw Basin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The ecology of the Siuslaw Basin landscape is complex, and reflects the interaction of climate, geology, landforms, natural vegetation, and land use.
The main causes are believed to be clearing of log jams, logging of riparian areas, conversion of valley bottoms to farms or homesteads, increased frequency of debris flows, and scouring of channels by splash dams.
Because the narrow valley bottoms are the only places in much of the watershed suited to agriculture, home building, and transportation corridors, and because these areas were the easiest to log initially, riparian forests and associated wetlands have born the brunt of the last 125 years of development.

The Siuslaw (sigh-oo-slaw) National Forest is located on the central west coast of Oregon.
Siuslaw is derived from the localYakonan dialect meaning "far away waters." As the visitor stands next to the Pacific Ocean and the Salmon River or beside one of the many creeks, streams, and rivers, all of which flow to the ocean, the accuracy of the name becomes clear.

The Siuslaw forest supplied streams with plentiful large wood, moderated sediment and stream flows, and buffered the watershed from the effects of intense winter storms.

Logging practices in the Siuslaw are directly responsible for reducing the size of wood in streams; and the size of wood in streams is directly related to how much habitat is available for salmon.
