Sivaji, who had been suffering from a heart ailment as well for the last one decade, was moved to the intensive care unit after renal complications also set in and his condition became critical.The end came at about 1945 IST on Saturday.
Sivaji's actor son Prabhu, who was shooting in Switzerland for a movie, was informed at 0300 IST that his father was on the edge.

Villupuram Chinniah Ganesan, or V.C. Ganesan, was born on October 1, 1928, in Villupuram, which was then in Tamil Nadu’s South Arcot district, to Chinnaiapillai, a railway employee and freedom fighter, and Rajamani, in whose name he was to launch later a successful film company, Rajamani Pictures.
Sivaji was honoured with the titles Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan and the Tamil Nadu government conferred on him the Kalaimamani award.

The statue already erected opposite to that of Mahatma Gandhi, was unveiled amidst controversy, after the Madras High Court declined to restrain the state Government from unveling it on a plea by a freedom fighter that it would obstruct the view of the Gandhi statue.

Sivaji's acting prowess, reportedly hailed by even Hollywood greats like late Marlon Brando of the "Godfather" fame, was for the first time acknowledged at international level when another of his film "Veerapandya Kattabomman"- the story of a freedom fighter, which he portrayed with great zeal, won him the Best Actor award, in Cairo in 1959.
