Six counties in the top ten saw decreases in agricultural sales in 2002-- Marion (2% decrease in sales), Washington (-2%), Yamhill (-5%), Malheur (-6%), Polk (-11%), and Umatilla, dropping a whopping 24% last year.
Other counties outside the top ten but showing healthy increases in agricultural sales last year were Hood River, with a $9 million jump (18%), Coos, with a $7 million increase (18%), and Curry, with a $4 million increase (20%).
Marion County's decline was buffered somewhat by it's tremendous diversity of agriculture.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Federal officials have added six counties to list of seventeen counties originally declared eligible for disaster funds to supplement state and local government costs for responding to the record snowstorm that hit the state in December, the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today.
The six new counties are: Crawford, Huron, Marion, Richland, Sandusky and Seneca.

Bellwether states and counties are those locations that have successfully voted for the winning presidential candidate over a period of time.
The counties are Logan, AR; Van Buren, AR; New Castle, DE; Vigo, IN; Lincoln, MO; Socorro, NM; Eddy, NM; and Ferry, WA (note that the results for Ferry, WA ended in a tie between Dukakis and Bush in 1988).
Gore's victory in New Castle county was also large enough to carry the bellwether state of Delaware by a narrower, but still large 13 percentage points.

Congress has appropriated approximately $5.05 billion through HUD to the state of Mississippi to aid in the long-term recovery of the State from Hurricane Katrina.  Governor Haley Barbour has decided to utilize a portion of these monies to fund water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects.
The grants will begin to be made to the County Utility Authorities shortly after approval of the Action Plan by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, HUD.
These County Utility Authorities were established by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Region Utility Act and empowered to provide planning and exercise general supervision over the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.

 UAlbany Expands Child Autism Program To 50 School Districts in Six Counties
ALBANY, N.Y. (March 25, 2004) -- The Regional Center for Autism pilot program, a pioneering approach to serve the needs of children with autism, their parents and school professionals, expanded this fall from three to six counties and from 30 to 50 school districts.
Originally called the North County Autism and Technical Assistance Center Pilot Program, CARD started with and will continue programs in Warren, Washington and Saratoga counties in addition to the expansion.
The State Education Department places this increase conservatively at more than 175 percent over the past 10 years, while the U.S. Department of Education has estimated the rise to be 435 percent nationwide during that same period.

The Six-County CVH Survey was designed to provide county-level data for the Lead CVH Counties on physical activity, nutrition, and other cardiovascular disease risk factors to use in planning and implementing their cardiovascular health programs.
The survey was a random-digit-dialed telephone survey of adults (at least 18 years of age) residing in each of the six counties, and covered the following topics: physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use, worksite environment (related to physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use), demographics, hypertension awareness, stroke awareness, and disability.
The data presented in these tables were weighted to adjust for the probability of participant selection and to reflect the demographic makeup of the six counties; this weighting procedure makes the data more representative of the population of the six counties.

Washington, December 17, 1999--Diversified farmers in six Pennsylvania counties are now eligible for an innovative whole farm insurance revenue insurance pilot program called the Adjusted Gross Revenue crop insurance program.
This new crop insurance is now available in Berks, Carbon, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Monroe, and Northampton counties for both the 2000 and 2001 insurance years, according to August Schumacher, Jr., undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services and chairman of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation board of directors.
The AGR program is currently available in 82 counties in Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
