The Six Divisions of Cavalry (Altı Bölük) was a corps of mounted elite soldiers in the Ottoman army.
The elite cavalry was the mounted counterpart to the Janissaries and played an important part in the Ottoman army.
The Six Divisions were probably founded during the reign of sultan Mehmed II (1451-1481), but the Spahis had existed since 1326.

Cavalry didn't form part of a division unless specially assigned, as it was in the case of the seven divisions mentioned above.
This was a radical departure for the U.S. Army, although the French apportioned their cavalry in much this way before the war (and so, by happy accident, were well-served when the war became a stalemate on the WF).
This shows some additional use of cavalry in support of US troops over what I thought to be the case, and it also shows that perhaps cavalry was somewhat more viable, in some roles, in Europe in WWI than we imagine.

In the spring of 1865, late in the war, federal cavalry under Brevet Maj. General J.H. Wilson was gathered in the vicinity of Eastport, Mississippi, on the Tennessee River at the Northwest comer of Alabama.
In his Division was one Brigade under John T. Croxton, originally from Lexington, Kentucky, who had fought with the Army of the Cumberland and had distinguished himself with Thomas at Chickamauga, and another under O. Lagrange of the First Wisconsin Cavalry.
Long's Division, heavier by two regiments, was to follow the right hand road, parallel to the other, to the main entrance of the city, while Wilson with the Fourth Regular Cavalry would develop the center.
