  Easy Reader Story
The Moments (1896) are early Rachmaninoff, so it might be claimed at the very least that they have the same youthful zest of his young predecessors.
But if at times the cavalry appears to be riding in, so it is, too, with the quiet, thoughtful moments, and together these are like curves on a descending, winding road that only a precise and yet confident pianist can maneuver to perfection.
It was an engaging concert from the moment the young man sat down and began to play.

 MusicWeb Review: CACD-9217-2
Her sense of structural control in the finale is characterful and absolute; she can inflect the line with mordant wit and the balance between piano and orchestra is good.
At moments of optimum expressive pointing one still feels a powerful directional sense from her and as the movement gathers steam she is mightily impressive, the peroration of the movement galvanic in its success.
Her figuration in the central passage of the B flat minor is full of filigree clarity, her rolled chords lavished with an auburn beauty, the contrastive sonorities and colouristic potential aptly delineated.

The Six Moments Musicaux - written in 1896 shortly before the disastrous premiere of Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony - mark an enormous advance over the Morceaux, both technically and stylistically.
True, Andrei Gavrilov beats Shelley to the finishing line both in the E minor and the colossal C major, but it’s Shelley who emerges as the more rounded musician, a point underlined by his natural and free-flowing way with the slower pieces.
In the D flat major - arguably the most forward-looking of the Moments Musicaux - Gavrilov can only manage a cautious plod while Shelley plays as though free of all constraint, soaring to the heavens and back.

The exception, of course, is the Prelude In C Sharp Minor, certainly the most popular piano piece Rachmaninov ever wrote.
But for all its popularity, Rachmaninov's Prelude is always performed as an excerpt from his five-movement Morceaux De Fantasie from 1892 and the Morceaux, along with its companion, the six Moments Musicaux from 1896, are nearly unknown to all but Rachmaninov's biggest fans.
The resulting disc is incontrovertible proof that Rachmaninov's early piano works are just as good as his later piano works.

He is however, particularly interesting in the way his playing and his technical prowess open up textural details in the complex expressiveness of pieces like the six Moments musicaux.
These are by no means the most celebrated among Rachmaninov's piano compositions, but they do have abundant subtleties, which the combination of secure technique and excellent recorded sound does much to uncover.

Brendel performs on a higher plane
Presented by the Seattle Symphony, he performed three works constituting many components of differing mood: Mozart's Nine Variations in D major on a Minuet by J.P. Duport, Schumann's "Kreisleriana" with its eight variations, and Schubert's six "Moments musicaux." He finished with Haydn's Sonata in C Major, Hob.XVI:48.
It was pure music to the ear: eloquent, profound or carefree by turn.
In Schumann's work of half a century later -- during which the piano evolved rapidly to a much more powerful instrument -- a cheerful abundance of notes sounded easy and relaxed, introspective here, exhilarating there; while Brendel provided Schubert's small gems with moments of musing, drama and Bach-like orderliness.
