The direct precursor to the U.S. Air Force, the USAAF formally existed between 1941 and 1947.
Renamed the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) and considered a separate arm of the Army, the new USAAF had an equal "voice" with the Army and Navy.
The Air Forces and Divisions were divided into a total of 91 Wings, called Bombardment, Tactical Reconnaissance, Training or Composite depending on whether their primary intended role was strategic bombing, pursuit, air support etc..

A Troubling Past: Air Force Fighter Acquisition since 1945*   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
From 1945 to mid-1950 both the Air Force and the Navy were forces in transition-from wartime expansion to peacetime contraction, from the era of the propeller-driven airplane to the era of the jet, from the era of conventional war to a perceived era of atomic warfare.
Air Force planners generally considered the Korean War an exception that was not typical of the future.
McNamara's decision on the Air Force version of the Navy's A-7 attack airplane followed his decision on the F-4 and reflected his continued belief that the Air Force needed to strengthen its close-air-support (CAS) commitment to the Army and that this could best be accomplished by equipping the service with numbers of specialized attack aircraft.
