Sixth Term Examination Paper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sixth Term Examination Papers in Mathematics, often referred to as STEP (or redundantly as STEP papers), are examinations set by the University of Cambridge in England to assess applicants for its undergraduate mathematics course.
Results from STEP papers are used to supplement candidates' existing exam results, which are often claimed to be insufficient to distinguish between the very brightest applicants.
Prior to 2003, STEP papers were available for a wide range of subjects, including, for example, chemistry and biology, but the mathematics STEP paper is the only one now in use.

All papers will be submitted by transmission to the cs28@ccat.sas.upenn.edu e-mail list; accordingly they will be "published" to the whole class, and you will all be expected to read all of them and to be prepared to discuss them.
Accordingly, a privileged form of second paper, dealing with a modern critic/interpreter of the late antique world, will be one that takes up a paper written by another student in the class and deals with it intelligently, responsibly, thoughtfully, carrying the discussion forward, perhaps disagreeing, perhaps supplementing on the basis of further reading as well.
Papers are judged, like other parts of this course, for attention to detail, lucidity of thought, and clarity and correctness of expression.

The Liberal Spirit in America by Peter Berkowitz - Policy Review, No. 120   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Yet the lesson that emerges from an examination of the liberalism that we share suggests that the professors who dream of disinterested deliberations and ideal speech situations grounded in self-evident premises, governed by objective and necessary rules, and issuing in unassailable public policy choices have drawn exactly the wrong conclusion.
Such an examination is a preliminary to crafting policies, consistent with the principles of a free society, that will safeguard the best interests of the liberal spirit — but especially in the current clamor and confusion, an indispensable preliminary.
Indeed, at every step of the way in the battle to overcome legally enforced discrimination, minorities, women, and their friends have enjoyed their greatest successes when they appealed to liberal principles.

Our term paper suggestions are, somewhat differently, intended to develop the student's ability to establish an account of a real world state of affairs through critical evaluation of factual evidence (that is, primary sources).
It would be pedagogically a short step to base a term paper assignment on academic interpretation of the situation described by the primary sources, based on secondary sources.
Term papers by students submitted for publication within a data set must be accompanied by a teacher's recommendation.

 Experiments in Deliberative Democracy:
The benefits supposedly provided by the state are myths; the costs--both in terms of the resources directly absorbed by the state and of indirect negative effects on economic growth and efficiency--are real and increasing.
They justify these proposals in terms of the interests that are common to everyone in the group, and the groups' agenda--its priorities--are simply those which all can accept as advancing their common interest.
A sixth design characteristic of these experiments is that they colonize state power and attempt to permanently transform central governance procedures according to the first five characteristics of problem-orientation, deliberation, participation, devolution, and recombination.
