  Sixtoo
He has also been trying to level the earth with Megasoid PA soundsystem action (we started a new residency at The Drake Hotel and are starting another one in NY before the fall ends....everything you have heard about this shit is true, come peep game at one of the nights!).
There is a new Sixtoo LP coming out on September 11th, titled "Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man" and there will be a bunch of Sixtoo shows in Montreal, Quebec City, London Ontario and some other spots before the European tour happens.
Sixtoo will be launching the record at Osheaga, alongside the homies (Kops Crew vs. Heavyweight) in the tents.

 Sixtoo - Duration
After a year-and-a-half quiet period from Sixtoo release-wise, and his recent disappearance online, the sudden release of Duration is a welcome return for the multi-talented maestro of dark lo-fi hiphop.
Sixtoo's sleeve notes for this release go from explaining the concept behind the Duration project to a self-confession of sorts, reflective and melancholy.
The conceptual nature of the project ties in with Sixtoo's street art, which he hastens to add is 'neither graffiti nor art'.

Sixtoo: It's the same shit, but there is a bigger mirror to look ourselves in at the end of the day.
Sixtoo: Not at all...what we are building now reflects a bigger picture for our music as well as taking on a responsibility to the listener.
Sixtoo: As for the music itself, I think even though sometimes it sounds "weird" or "deep" its still open to interpretation, so there is still room for the listener to take away some reflection of their personal experience.

It was signature Sixtoo production and rhymes, but one also got the sense that his new surroundings in the North end of Montreal were starting to bring something different to the mix.
By the time 2003 rolled around, Sixtoo had come to the attention of the Montreal Ninja Tune office and he found himself with a fresh new contract, and a turning point on which to really assess his work up to that point and to decide on how he wanted to proceed.

Sixtoo would install a 'marker' in each location - these were panels from public property that he borrowed to decorate them with paint markers and then replace them - in order to identify that 'sound happened' there.
The project presented a union between two of the urban artforms that Sixtoo is involved in, a bond between the visual and the auditory.
Sixtoo and Buck65's was a partnership that seemed like the only possibility - the pair had collaborated somewhat throughout their careers, but, Sebutones records aside, both produced their best work on their own.

Sixtoo: Chewing Glass & Other Miracle Cures: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-23)
Where Sixtoo differs from so many artists that beg a quick glance in the DJ Shadow Thesaurus is his newfound reliance on live instrumentation.
Sixtoo doesn't quite equal the skills of his former Anticon collaborators, but these tracks provide an adequate bridge between his intricate acoustic compositions and former hip-hop gloom.
Fortunately, Sixtoo is as confident in his composing abilities as he is aware of his weaknesses, and this can certainly be considered his watershed album.

When Sixtoo lends his vocals on this project (on only two occasions), his voice is brash and distorted, staying as one with the edginess of the music present here.

 Mataphorensics Reissues: Sixtoo, Sebutones
Sixtoo's discography extends many years worth of records before Psyche Intangible, but this album is widely considered the debut of the modern day Sixtoo.
Sixtoo's music is essentially rap, with occasional hooks, over looped samples and drum machine beats and breaks.
As his vocals end, Sixtoo allows the track to loop twice, before breaking it down, reversing it and seamlessly dropping a new set of drums for his part of the song.

Sixtoo is not your average hip hop instrumentalist.
Unlike some of his contemporaries, Sixtoo employs much more than a drum machine and a sampler.

Sixtoo has carefully carved his niche as the master sampler, chopping, manipulating and building electrifyingly sinister soundscapes.
A gift of an electronic Rhodes Piano from his long-term girlfriend sparked off the idea that this record would not be solely based on mining wax for samples, tracks were built from live sources and on some the organic quality of the live instrumentation dominates all else.
As his vision of the album progressed, Sixtoo placed a number of strategic phone calls to friends and acquaintances, everyone from Kraut pysch-rock god Damo Suzuki and Norsola and Thierry from the mysterious Godspeed You Black Emperor, to Eric Craven from The Hanged Up.

Sixtoo: I lived in the metropolitan outskirts of Toronto until I was 17, at which time I moved to Halifax.
Sixtoo: Yeah, for this record I basically stripped away the notion that I could only sample records, and built a lot of the source material out of stuff played by myself and friends.
Sixtoo: My music is much more concerned with the politics of arts and culture than the fashion of it.

Still, for those listeners that had enjoyed Sixtoo’s poetry on the mic, the perceived move towards a voiceless Sixtoo was a bitter accompaniment to the sweetness of that new instrumental sound.
A collage of the two Sixtoos, one half poetic wizardry, one half instrumental mastery (literally - on the double LP, the first record has all the vocal tracks, while the second is all instrumental), Antagonist should be considered the first successful display of Sixtoo's talent both behind the boards and on the mic.
Sixtoo’s delivery, a more impassioned version of his oft-criticized monotone, has never sounded more appropriate than it does here; resigned, bitter, but still alive, his voice crackles with lonely emotion amongst the bleak sonic landscapes he has painted for himself.

Sixtoo - Antagonist Survival Kit - Stylus Magazine
Although Anticon cohort Sixtoo can hardly be put in the same category as either of the aforementioned artists, his fourth album demonstrates a clear disparity between his rapping and producing skills.
On the album’s second side, perhaps grasping where his true strength lies, Sixtoo abandons rapping altogether, and the final half of the album is completely instrumental.
Even on the best of the vocal songs, Sixtoo never stumbles across anything this stirring; his music seems limited, for much of the album, by a desire to put the focus on his typically Anticon-esque lyrics.

The one area of concern is the track featuring Sixtoo hero Damon Suzuki from Can, the vocals are improvised and damn it shows over the hard-to-take nine minutes.
There are no feel-happy party tracks, there is no narrative a la Buck 65 with whom the grooves share a certain connection, but even so, I still found the album to be a fine addition to the pile of instrumental hip hop records that I find myself returning to on a more frequent basis.
To complete the package Sixtoo has provided a nice full rundown on how the tracks were made in the exhaustive sleevenotes, the noisetoys used and so on, the weather, everything, lovely stuff.

 sonomu: Sixtoo
Sixtoo weaves a web that is always threatening to tangle, but never quite does, however complex and deep it becomes.
While his preoccupation with global warming is admirable, and the shocked declaration that "My son will never see the snow" on "Lacking Precipitation" is very moving, he does occasionally verge on sounding like a grumpy old bloke complaining that the summers aren't what they were when we were kids.
The gorgeous, haunting "Sultry" weaves an (appropriately) sultry cello around some intimate beats while Sixtoo talks (and definitely doesn't rap here): "take these lies in the poem of your heart...they're all I have...this one box that holds my entire life in it", before offering said box to the listener by the end of the piece.

The sheer number of Sixtoo’s creative efforts suggests he is entering an artistic high point, but in order to get to this stage in his career, the 27-year-old admits he had no choice but to leave Halifax.
Despite the silkscreening and the new attention on his graffiti art days, Sixtoo said he doesn’t focus on aspects of hip hop such as rap or graffiti art much anymore due to the effort required “to actually be a good producer.

With a discography that spans nearly 10 years and two dozen releases, not to mention a plethora of collaborations as both producer and emcee, Sixtoo has etched his name into hip hop and electronic music the way all musicians should: The hard way.
His association with the Anticon collective at times pigeonholed him as "emo-hop," a term that gets thrown around much to the chagrin of all those involved, yet his growing catalog of work clearly shows a level of unparalleled growth and musical ingenuity far beyond that type of classification.
Sixtoo's first release for Ninja Tune is his most advanced offering to date, a sack full of highly orchestrated beats that perhaps moves him into the category of composer rather than producer, if there can be such a distinction.

It can't be an easy start for Sixtoo, being that this hip hop thing is still more local and neighborhood focused than we'd like to admit.
So just the mentioning of his alienness, and just the first few notes of his music will be a last nail in his coffin, as this is too left field for the center focused listener.
And so, even though Sixtoo is from Halifax Canada, even though his music is not a spitting image of the Billboard charts, the name of this kid, is known among those that should know.

It took the form of a 42-minute song, with parts re-recorded in public spaces, with visual markers left throughout his hometown of Halifax to accompany the project.
