Cleveland Bridge - Sizewell B Power Station
The construction and commissioning of the Sizewell B nuclear power station in only 78 months was an outstanding achievement for Nuclear Electric and their vast team of contractors and designers.
Cleveland Bridge undertook a key role in the project as main contractor for the steel liner plate to the reactor building - a non-structural protective element that had to behave as a structure during construction.
The floor liner plate represented, for Sizewell, a fairly straightforward task enabling the team to adapt to the nuclear culture.

These regulations are now in force and require the local authorities to provide adequate off-site emergency plans in contingency for specific and all reasonably foreseeable accidents and incidents that could result in the release of radioactivity and the declaration of a radiological emergency.
The incident considered in the presentation centres around a terrorist triggered release from the Sizewell B operational nuclear power plant (PWR) which requires rapid prophylactic and other countermeasures to thwart the health impact of radio-iodine uptake and general external and internal exposure from fuel and core fission and activated radioisotopes.
In effect, the off-site emergency plan in place at Sizewell is untested and unproven in its effectiveness against accidental events and not at all geared to counter terrorist actions (which may include an element of intentionally harassing the effectiveness of any countermeasures).

The lights are on but there's nobody home at Britain's top nuclear facility | Greenpeace International
Sizewell, United Kingdom — When a large group of Greenpeace volunteers strolled into a nuclear power station under the early morning cover of darkness, you might expect they would meet some opposition.
Just after six this morning 19 Greenpeace volunteers peacefully gained access to British Energy's Sizewell plant by cutting a hole in the two-wire fences, which are all that separate the nuclear facility from a public beach.
The fence is just a few metres from the door to the control building, which the volunteers managed to gain access to by using a ladder to reach a door on the side of the building 10 metres off the ground.

Vulcan Arms - Sizewell Local History
Sizewell, on the other hand has had very little written about it, though it was once renowned for the smuggling activities that occurred on its beaches, especially during the seventeenth century.
The residents of Sizewell, could, on occasion, see up to 100 carts gathered on the beach and up to 300 horses such was the enormity of the smugglers operations, their rewards being tea and spirits from the clippers that sailed past this coast.
It is somewhat uncanny that today Sizewell is dominated by a nuclear power station, where energy is produced from the metal Uranium, thus fire and metal and Vulcan are still together.

Criticisms of the Software Shutdown System at Sizewell B   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
In the case of Sizewell B, this point is questioned as its shutdown software is approximately 20 times in length of the software shutdown system at the Darlington nuclear power plant in Canada.
Despite all the cynicism surrounding the safety of the PPS of Sizewell B, the NII has certified the shutdown software as safe, and commercial operation of the plant is scheduled to begin by January of 1995.
Advocates for the operation of Sizewell B point to its "Defense in Depth" policy which includes numerous layers of protection, the most prominent being operator intervention in case of failure, before any harmful effects are suffered by the public.

Greenpeace fears a Sizewell C in the not-too-distant future, despite the widespread unpopularity of the government's plans for new nuclear reactors.
Arriving mostly by busload at Sizewell B in the early hours of a windy Monday morning, the protesters gained easy access to plant grounds by tossing carpets over razor wire and then climbing ladders over the fences.
It may have been just beginner's luck, but the Sizewell protest was Greenpeace's first-ever occupation of a nuclear power plant.
