Ska - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ska's popularity has waxed and waned since its original inception, and has had revivals of note in England in the 1980s and another wave of popularity in the 1990s.
The music of ska is known for the placement of the accented guitar and piano rhythms on the upbeats.
Supplementing the lilting Jamaican rhythms of ska with punk rock's uncompromising lyrics and brutal guitar chords resulted in a hybrid that satisfied a thirst for a moshing groove, plenty of melody via the horns, and thoughtful, irreverent, or politically charged lyrics.

Furthermore, the Ska Revivalists were among the only bands of the era to feature racially integrated lineups, which was a bold political statement for the time.
Indeed, ska revival was more implicitly political than any of their British punk and new wave contemporaries.
Throughout the early '80s, ska revival bands, particularly Madness, were very popular in the U.K. The groups didn't make much headway in the States until 1982 and 1983, when MTV aired videos by all of the important (and many of the lesser) bands.

Punks held a very keen respect for the ska/reggae community, seeing as they were the only other political radicals with similar yet pleasantly, and comfortably different views.
Ska music is usually the second step of becoming an alleged "skunk", with punk being the more mainstream and recognized music genre.
The punk part the name implies is more the lifestyle selection of the specimen, and the ska is the alleged music of choice.

Moreover, ska, and related reggae, thrives in an underground with dozens upon dozens of bands across America, and may be the most widespread imported style next to rock itself in Mexico and South America.
Ska's first lifetime was from 1961 to about 1965 or '66, but it influenced today's scene less than the music's remarkable rebirth years later.
By the end of the decade, however, punk masters like The Clash had made reggae the sound of outsider integrity for alienated whites and spurred the rise of the so-called "2 Tone" bands.

The Berkeley, California quartet is fronted by the guitarists and singers Lars Frederiksen and Tim Armstrong, who write the songs with bassist Matt Freeman and benefit from the kicking drums of Brett Reed.
Certainly one of the finest marks of reggae and ska in rock is that they often indicate a firmly idealistic impulse.
Ska is only a very strong part of Rancid's style, and it may not be enough on its own to sustain a young group nowadays.

Combining equal parts of deep funk, high-energy punk, and frantic ska, the Los Angeles-based Fishbone was one of the most distinctive and eclectic alternative rock bands of the late '80s.
A great deal of the groundwork for the mid- to late-'90s explosion of ska and ska-metal was laid by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, who were one of the first bands to cross high-energy ska with hardcore punk and heavy metal and also helped shift its tone toward testosterone-filled party music.
So many mid-'90s bands combined ska with punk rock, and so few of them did it in any memorable way, that it's a genuine pleasure to be able to report on one that makes it work perfectly.

Punk's existence began in 1976 when the Ramones emerged from CBGB's with a ramshackle image, fast rhythms, and a complete lack of musical prowess--a refreshing change from the often-overproduced (and overwrought) rock sounds so prevalent during the '70s.
The Ramones’ trip to England is said to have ignited the Sex Pistols into action; the Pistols took a more aggressive and nihilistic approach and spawned an equally fervent scene.
Since then, there's been no shortage of disaffected and creative youths, and therefore the popularity of alternative, punk, new wave, and so-called 'indie rock' hasn’t waned a bit.
