Skam Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skam's first 12-inch single is rumored to have never been officially released, only distributed as a promo.
Skam entered the full-length market in 1998 with the release of Soup by Bola (SKALD/P2) and Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada, the latter being jointly released with Warp Records (SKALD/P1, WARPCD/LP55), both of which have praised by the IDM community as classic recordings.
Skam is renowned for its multiple series of records within the label, all of which are an anagram of "SKAM".

Matador Records | Boards of Canada Biography
For some time Boards of Canada had been recording EP’s and “albums” by financing the manufacture themselves, on their own label Music70, but the first of these to be released outside the band’s own circle of friends was “Twoism,” a limited-edition collection of grainy, melancholy melodies over slow, dry electronic rhythms.
Skam Records and Munich’s Musik Aus Strom teamed up in 1997 to release a series of very limited compilation EP’s under the name “MASK,” the first of which included an exclusive track by Boards of Canada.
Boards of Canada recorded an exclusive session for the John Peel Show on Radio One in June 1998, and performed live on the John Peel Show, during the recording of the session.

Skam's second record, the first Gescom EP, didn't appear until 1994, and by 1996, when the label began to attract attention thanks to a critical mass of releases from Gescom and then-new artists like Jega, Bola, and Boards of Canada, Skam 01 had become mostly a matter of myth.
Skam founders Andy Maddocks and Rob Hall had always been known for keeping their movements obscure, but Boards of Canada were downright obfuscatory, and misinformation flowed freely.
While the beats aren't nearly as complex as on later records, the seeds are there in the form of clunky beatbox samples and crunchy snares reminiscent of boots on icy snow.

When I rang the Skam offices to speak to Andy Maddocks, needless to say, he was up to his neck in cardboard and glue.
Skam officially started in 1991 but didn't really enter the public eye until the release of the first Gescom single in 1994.
Released jointly between Warp and Skam, it's to be their only full-length album for the label after coming to the attention of Warp by way of two singles with Skam.

After various releases on hard-to-get cassettes and Skam Records (and it’s enigmatic offshoot Mask), the Scottish duo have released one of the finest albums of 1998, "Music Has The Right To Children" on Warp.
An example is "Nlogax" from the "Hi Scores" ep on Skam, which begins like an old electro or disco track but halfway through it suddenly becomes something nightmarish, like your brain is starting to malfunction in the middle of the tune.
We began to work on the album at the beginning of 1997 and it was meant to be for Skam, but in the summer Warp came to us and said "we like this album", so the labels decided to co-release it.

Boards of Canada are the Scottish-based duo of Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin and this record is one of the definitive melancholic IDM cloud-floaters of it's generation.
They also collaborated on another Skam project, Gescom, but where friends Autechre perhaps reflect the industrial heritage of Rochdale in their uncompromising compositions, Bola's sound is that of the surrounding hills, moors, streams, canals.
In 2004, Skam invited entries to be considered for inclusion on a compilation.

 Re:mote Induction: Jega - SKA009
Jega's most recent work on Skam, the untitled SKA009 EP, is a fantastic quirky drum'n'bass outing that is similar to what has been expected from Skam.
Jega has released one previous record on Skam, several on Mike Paradinas' (µ-ziq) planet µ label, and a full length released in the US on Matador Recordings.
However, all but the planet µ and Matador records are impossible to find - like far too many other record labels these days, Skam releases their EPs in very limited quantities.

Best releases are the Gescom singles (Autechre alias) and the Boards of Canada album (joint release with Warp) which is exceptional.
The exceptions here would be Bola Fyuti which is great and the SMAK series has its moments, again both are readily available on CD.
Then you get records like the team doyobi remix ep and quinoline yellow's cyriak parasol which just sound like vintage Skam and all is forgiven.

In typical Soulseek Records fashion, Kernel32 eschews individual artist style in his tune selection to bring you a flawless mix that at one moment draws you into its cosy fireside warmth, the next punishes you with twisted beats and sounds you didn't know your speakers could make.
For Kernel32, this was quite deliberate: "I was hoping to portray the varied styles and genres that the artists involved with soulseek records produce," he says.
This is his first mix for Soulseek Records but you'd be mad to bet against him doing another in the future.

 MISCREAT >> REVIEW - SKAM
As you can probably deduce from the title, ‘Skampler’ collates work from Skam’s impressive roster, so there are tracks here from Jega, Gescom and the mighty Boards Of Canada.
Sounding like some kind of heavenly mash up of Detroit, Autechre and old skool hip hop, Skam’s music is always different, and ALWAYS ‘interesting’, to say the least.
Besides all this, it is frankly worth taking out a mortgage to get hold of any record that includes Boards of Canada’s ‘Everything you do is a balloon’.

Rising in the mid-'90s out of the same northern British electronic-music scene as Autechre and Gescom, Bola joined forces with Skam Records, the enigmatic Manchester label famous for issuing collectible IDM holy grails.
Speaking of which, Bola's 1998 debut LP for Skam, Soup, is a gorgeous, insular piece of what used to be called "armchair techno." Translation: The music here is a transporting listen on headphones, its rhythms intended to make your brain wiggle more than they will your hips.
And now Skam's reissuing (with three bonus cuts) the limited-edition 1999 vinyl release Shapes on CD, so fans can finally hear what for many is the missing piece in Bola's idiosyncratic sonic puzzle.

Rumored to have never been officially released, only distributed as a promo, Skam put out its first 12-inch single, the self-titled debut from Lego Feet (SKA001), which is now commonly known to be the pioneering duo Autechre.
N.M.B. Allstars (SMAK07, "North Manchester Bedroom Allstars") went on to become part of the sublabel 33, which Skam has been known to refer to as "a part of the family.", Others, like Made (SMAK03), are renowned Skam live acts.

One of the most highly anticipated records of the year (at least for AQ staff and customers alike) is *finally* available.
The rest of the record trudges alternately between slow motion chugging and poundiing, moody mathy rhythmic workouts, and some truly dense tangles of chaotic riff rhythm mashup.
Yet, both of these projects have the same humble beginnings on Manchester's legendary Skam Records (often mistakenly identified as Autechre's label, which it's not, although Autechre has strong ties to the label), and both projects share a very similar aesthetic of minor-key futurism implanted onto a framework of spectral breakbeat fragmentation.
