Skamander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1920 it created its organ, the „Skamander” monthly, although its members collaborated also with the „Wiadomości Literackie” and other newspapers.
In contrast to the basic aims of the Young Poland movement of late 19th century, the members of Skamander neglected the need for semi-mythological heroes and protagonists and they replaced them with common people in their poetry.
In contrast to the contemporary Awangarda Krakowska movement, they saw themselves as the continuators of the Polish literary tradition, especially that of romanticism and neo-romanticism.

The five poets who formed a group called Skamander - Julian Tuwim (1894-1953), Antoni Slonimski (1895-1976), Jan Lechon (1899-1956), Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz (1894-1980), and Kazimierz Wierzynski (1894-1969) - owed their popularity to the fact that their poetry was original and innovative while also far more comprehensible than the works of their avant-garde contemporaries.
Skamander's only program consisted of rejecting traditional concepts of poetry's "duties" and enjoying artistic freedom; accordingly, the group abandoned all neoromantic conventions and turned to contemporary reality and a refreshingly direct style.
Wierzynski, initially a joyful vitalist, was to reach his peak in his bitter post-1945 poetry, written in exile and much modernized in form.
