  Skarn
Skarns in the igneous environment are associated with hornfels, marble hornfels and wider zones of calc-silicate rocks.
Because skarns are formed from incompatible-element rich, sliceous aqueous fluids a variety of uncommon mineral types are found in the skarn environment, such as: tourmaline, topaz, beryl, corundum, fluorite, apatite, barite, strontianite, tantalite, anglesite, and others.
Skarns are a class of calc-silicate rocks and are intimately associated with granite intrusions, usually of sedimentary-metamorphic origin (S-type).

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Polarized Light Microscopy Gallery - Tactite Skarn
Generally considered a type of skarn, tactite is formed by contact metamorphism and metasomatism of carbonate rocks.
Skarns can be found around the world and most developed during the Mesozoic period some 63 million to 230 million years ago.
Zones of skarn are usually relatively irregular in shape due to the erratic characteristics of the host rocks, which vary in porosity, permeability, and lithology.

 skarn_deposits
These skarns represent the distal expression of magmatic activity and exposed igneous rocks (in drill core) are dominantly thin dikes and sills with chilled margins and a very fine grained to aphanitic groundmass.
Skarn minerals consist dominantly of garnet and pyroxene with lesser epidote, ilvaite, and actinolite; all are iron-rich (Purtov et al., 1989).
Early skarn assemblages in reduced tungsten skarns are dominated by hedenbergitic pyroxene and lesser grandite garnet with associated disseminated fine-grained, molybdenum-rich scheelite (powellite).

At the outcrop scale, the transition from skarn to volcaniclastic rocks is sharp, crosscuts bedding, and is in places marked by a 1 to 2 cm thick rim of K-feldspar (Fig C).
The inner part of the skarn body consists of brown garnet (grt), a first rim is made of epidote and pyroxene, and a second one of K-feldspar (kfs), which forms the transition to volcaniclastic rocks.
Petrographic evidence indicates a continuous process of skarn formation with a garnet-rich and pyroxene-poor prograde stage and gold deposition during a weak and sulfide-poor retrograde stage characterized by the precipitation of epidote, quartz, K-feldspar, calcite, chlorite ± plagioclase ± muscovite, pyrite and subordinate chalcopyrite, hematite.

If skarn development occurs under unusually reducing conditions then gold is deposited at ore grades, accompanied by pyrrhotite, from chloride solutions, as may have been the case in the Fortitude hedenbergite skarn at Copper Canyon.
The absence of retrograde alteration in the Fortitude skarn suggests that this may have been the case there, as fluids were channeled into the Liberty fault system, producing gold ores associated with actinolite, chlorite, and pyrite in the Upper Fortitude and Tomboy-Minnie deposits.
The other endmember gold deposit that occurs in or near skarn, the silica-pyrite gold ores, represents perhaps the lowest temperatures and the most acidic conditions in carbonate rocks developed in the evolutionary history of a given district, a fluid type that most commonly is though of as distal.

Skarn veins and replacement zones, ranging up to several tens of centimetres thick, are common for several metres beyond the skarn horizon contact.
Hartley and Williamson (1995) suggested the skarn protolith was probably an interbedded, fossiliferous limestone and calcareous mudstone sequence, and they note the presence of relatively unaltered small patches of residual limestone and marl outcrops at the northern end of the skarn exposure.
Skarn alteration is characterised by prograde and retrograde assemblages.

Several skarn units were cut, the most important being a 68.6 meters intercept with zinc mineralization containing gold and silver as disseminations or in veins and veinlets.
Further assays are pending from both of these holes as all skarn units are being assayed as well as mineralized intrusive and mineralized recrystallized limestones.

Secondly, Hole TA 17.5-05A confirmed the continuity of the green skarn also found in hole TA 17.5-04 in which 91.7 meters grading 1.11 g/t Au, 8.56 g/t Ag and 0.76% Zn were cut (see Stockwatch press release dated April 3rd, 2006), by entering the same skarn unit 200 meters below.
To date, 60 meters have already been encountered but only assays for the initial 50.1 meters are available and those yielded an average of 0.32 g/t Au, 4.2 g/t Ag and 0.55% Zn which compares favorably to the 0.19% Zn for the similar section in hole TA 17.5-04.
