Skaz had his hands full for the morning with a band of raiders on there way to the outer imperial colonies.
Skaz dumped the body in the back alley and proceed to clean up the dead raider's blood from his floor.
Skaz moved behind the counter and began to wipe it down with a cloth, more out of habit than for cleaning.

Canadian Slavonic Papers: Between Literary and Subliterary Paradigms: Skaz and Contemporary Russian Estrada Comedy
Skaz's "theatricality," "orality," ambiguous authorship, spontaneity, and "folksiness" have found a new life in a form that one could call estrada comedy skaz.
The innate theatricality of literary skaz also reveals itself in the concept of literary masks, through which the author "intentionally disguises himself as someone."12 The literary mask usually implies a consistent use of various individualizing features that are specific to the character-narrator, whose voice the reader seemingly "hears" throughout the story.
The skaz narrator, who sees "neither far nor deep," ostensibly allows for endless humorous possibilities based on the sharp contrast between the narrator's inadequate perception of the world and the author's (and the audience's) broader cultural understanding.22 However, not all literary skaz narratives have humorous or satirical intent.

 CONTEXT: Issue No. 13
So skaz is (at least much of the time) a plot device and cannot be viewed outside the realm of plot.
Skaz is also used (much of the time) to ground a system of images.
Skaz reshapes a plot, converting the groundwork of the narrative into one aspect of the plot.

SKAZ is the leaps between, the 'on your way to', the making from structure of a relationship between structure and word, between word and phrase, between phrase and Shakespearian quote, between quote and irony.
And the clear stream is no longer clear' Skaz is what is happening before you observe it and mess it up.
Writers skaz about originality, about all the world reduced into a single moment of what it was/is before I observe.

Such narration may include elements of skaz, but is too complex to be subsumed by it.
Foma's simple skaz is compared to Rudyj's apparently artless prefaces, which reveal more complexity and ambiguity than simple skaz.
The Conclusion, among other things, relates the preceding analyses to Dead Souls, in which the skaz "Tale of Captain Kopejkin" can be interpreted not only as a foil for narration in the novel, but as a parody of Gogol's earlier narrative stances.

Academic critics sometimes use the term "skaz" to refer to a first-person narrative that seems to adopt the characteristics of speech.
Skaz traditionally included slang, proverbs, dialect and telling errors of decorum or style.
The first classic of skaz in English is probably Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, in which Huck's uneducated English magically shows up the hypocritical or vicious adults he encounters.

In the first decades of the 20th century, the Russian Formalist critics discovered skaz as a narrative technique which, in periods of stylistic calcification, helps to renew literary language by bringing into it alien linguistic material, "other's" discourse, often oral speech.
The first part of this study describes the importance of skaz as a literary topic to the Formalists, as well as their understanding of its dynamics.
A chapter reviewing examples of skaz in Russian literature, together with a brief discussion of close narrative "relatives," suggests the technique's complexity and variety.

The stories exemplify the Russian Formalist notion of 'skaz,' a type of mimetic voice characterized by orientation toward the speech of another.
Authorial control is weakened to the extent that the narrative depends almost completely on the characters' speech.

Eikhenbaum notes that skaz requires a great emotional distance from the invented narrator, a constant awareness that I, the author, am not my narrator: I think and feel very differently from him, and his language is not mine.
The author who comes closest to Tolstaya’s skaz chronologically and linguistically is Venedikt Erofeev: his hungover Venichka in Moscow-Petushki speaks and thinks a comparable mixture of elevated rhetoric formulas and a local wino’s dialect.
Tolstaya’s Benedikt (the name is no accident) is the son of an educated woman, the survivor of the nuclear Explosion, and a coarse peasant father who insisted that Benedikt become a stove-man, although his mother intended him for the scribes because, Explosion or no Explosion, they had "three generations with higher education" in the family.

His first collection of stories, Sibirsky Skaz (1916) was a celebration of the Siberian people, nature and life.
It also contained in it a reflection of the revolutionary-democratic attitude of the author.

 REREADING GOGOL'S MISWRITTEN BOOK
The definition of skaz hinges on the distinction between the intellectually and stylistically unreliable narrator and the implied author, who towers above him simply because we the readers cannot imagine an author so stupid and inept.
And how do we then deny Gogol the benefit of stupidity in his best - skaz - writing, whose striking similarity to SP has been noted by Gogol's contemporaries and later critics.
Of course, once reinterpreted as a stylistic pattern, that voice exhibits a subtle use of skaz for maximum effect: the unreliable speaker gets away with making two opposite points.
