The ball sort of launches off of the hump and then lands in one of several holes -- the farther away the hole is, the more points that hole is worth.
The appeal of the click (which is actually comprised of eight separate and distinct mini-clicks, which are separated by a nanosecond or so as each ball collides with the one in front of it) is hard to describe, but it's one of those exquisitely perfect noises that's exciting and comforting all at once.
The brown balls, which usually have the battle-scarred remnants of a stripe near the center, measure three and an eighth inches in diameter and weigh about five ounces.

There was also the same click as the gate opened and the balls were released from the stall's nether regions and scooted down, like a timber centipede, into the alley on your right.
The farther away the ring your ball landed in, the more points you got, but sneakily, the smaller the ring's circumference.
Variations like ICE Ball and Smart Ball offer a bit of healthy competition for the Skee-Ball brand, but regardless of shape, size, or scoring options, Skee-Ball remains an arcade fixture today, still tempting skee-ballers to take one more roll toward prize case glory.

If you have a single ball system, the game works the best with 5 balls, but will function properly with as little as one ball.
If your games uses switches instead of sensors, it is possible to use different colored balls or different sizes (within reason).
The sensors used by Skee-Ball are designed to detect our standard wooden Skee-Balls, and the infrared beam may not sense balls of a different color or a different size.

TNL Forum - My take on skee-ball.
The premise of Skee-Ball works like this, you throw a wooden ball up a ramp, and, if your aim is right, the ball will go into a scoring ring.
If you throw the ball with all your might, you could get the 100 point ring right off the bat, or you can miss it, and all other rings, and get no points.
The shades of brown on both the ball, and the ramp itself, are amazingly thorough.

 The Big Apple: Skee-Ball
An indoor game in which balls set rolling down an alley are projected over a hump or otherwise into targets.
It is the latest development of the game of bowls, sharply distinguished from all similar games by a hump in the centre of the alley which causes the ball to leap high in the air and enter a target.
The new sport is really a variation of bowling with a hump two-thirds of the way down the alley that shoots the ball, which is about the size of a duck-pin ball, up to cups arranged on a sort of large, grooved target.
