The Skeena River was known initially as the "K'shian" river meaning "water from the clouds".
For the Native people, the Skeena River was used for transportation, communication, war, trade, as a source of food and at times for protection.
In 1944, the Skeena River highway between Terrace and Prince Rupert was ceremoniously opened with a convoy of Canadian and American Army bands that were part of the troops stationed here during WW2.

The second-largest river (after the FRASER) entirely within BC, its main tributaries are the Bulkley and Babine rivers.
Because of strong native control of the lower river, the first non-Indian penetration of the Skeena watershed was from the E, when the HBC established posts on Babine and Bear lakes (1822, 1826).
In 1859 a reconnaissance for a transcontinental railway was made up the Skeena as far as the Bulkley R. 1871 saw a gold rush up the Skeena to the Omineca goldfields; some good strikes were made on the Skeena itself.

The coho of the Lachmach River, which is located at the head of Work Channel, is a wild (not enhanced) population used as an indicator for populations on the north coast including the Skeena.
The test fishery is primarily intended for in-season management of the Skeena sockeye fisheries, but because coho, chinook, steelhead and pink are also caught, it has been routinely used as an abundance index for all salmon species returning to the Skeena River.
Coastal populations north of the Skeena, especially those in southeastern Alaska, appear to be robust while those to the south appear to be as depressed as those in the Upper Skeena.

In 1864, the first sternwheeler to ply the waters of the Skeena was the UNION, commanded by Captain Coffin under contract to the Collins Overland Telegraph Company.
In 1866, the Collins Overland Telegraph Company built the MUMFORD and sent her up the Skeena, but she only made it to the mouth of the Kitsumgalem River, a distance of 110 miles.
The SKEENA was operated by P. Burns and Co., which was contracted to supply meat to all the construction camps in the valley.
