Davis battled breast cancer starting in 1988, and she died of it in a Nashville, Tennessee, hospice, aged 72.
Skeeter Davis was the only woman nominated for Best Country and Western Recording (for "Set Him Free" in 1959) by the Grammy Awards in the five year period of 1959-1963 in which only one award was given in the country field.

Getting back to Skeeter Davis though, i remember her in a Stateside PX signing autographs and speaking with the troops when i was in the Army...sorry i don't remember which post it was...She supported the troops, and for that she has my profound respect and my prayers to her family.
The obituary doesn't say it but I'll add it: Skeeter was once married to "Nashville Now" host Ralph Emery and was married to NRBQ's Joey Spampinato.
