AANOS, Professor Kazem Fathie on Musculoskeletal Disorders
The degree of muscle stiffness and skeletal muscle spasm was assessed by interview, inspection, palpation and estimation of the range of motion.
Muscle spasm was identified as sudden, violent, involuntary contractions of a muscle or muscle group attended by pain and interference with proper function.
A skeletal muscle relaxant, metaxalone, was dispensed to 50 patients with skeletal muscle disorders, treated on an outpatient basis at the Medical College of Virginia.

Muscle relaxant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A muscle relaxant is a drug which decreases the tone of a muscle.
There are several other skeletal muscle relaxants, which may belong in the above categories:
Drugs from classes other than the muscle relaxant class are also used to treat spasticity:

 AANOS, Article by Professor Fathie
Beckman(1), in his chapter on Skeletal Muscle Relaxants, reported that the clinical improvement in patients with muscular disorders is due to an intrinsic relaxant effect on skeletal musculature and pointed out that certain drugs used primarily for their tranquilizing properties are also helpful in the management of certain neurologic disorders with a marked muscular component.
The skeletal muscle relaxant used in the present studies was metaxalone, a relatively new skeletal muscle relaxant.
Although the relaxant properties of such drugs may not be as great as the relaxant properties of other drugs, the patients may be willing to overlook their lesser effect on spasticity because of the enhanced feeling of well-being induced by their sedative-tranquilizing properties.

MATERIALS AND METHOD: The skeletal muscle relaxant effect of the alcoholic extract of CM was studied on isolated frog rectus abdominis muscle, isolated rat phrenic nerve diaphragm muscle preparation and in intact young chicks.
The parameter studied in the isolated muscle or isolated nerve muscle preparations was the extent of inhibition of acetylcholine or electrically-induced contraction of skeletal muscles.
The type of skeletal muscle relaxation produced by CM was studied in unanaesthetized intact young chicks by the method of Battle and Zaimis.

 Data Sheet
Studies have shown that in the presence of dantrolene sodium, the responses of the muscle to caffeine are decreased or delayed.
In isolated muscle preparations, dantrolene sodium uncouples the excitation and contraction of skeletal muscle, probably by interfering with the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
Dantrolene sodium may prevent the increase in myoplasmic calcium and the acute catabolism within the muscle cell by interfering with the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum to the myoplasm.

Although no treatment is currently available that may slow or alter the disease's progression, therapy with baclofen (Lioresal®), a voluntary (i.e., skeletal) muscle relaxant, may help to reduce spasticity in some HSP patients.
In addition, in patients with bladder control problems, treatment with oxybutynin (Ditropan®), an involuntary (i.e., smooth) muscle relaxant and spasmolytic agent, may help to relieve spasticity of the bladder.
Although physical therapy does not prevent or reduce degenerative changes of the spinal cord, experts indicate that receiving regular therapy may play an important role in helping HSP patients maintain and increase muscle strength and range of motion.

 Parkinsn's List Drug DataBase diazepam / Valium,Valrelease,Dizac
In addition to treating status epilepticus, diazepam has recently been shown effective in preventing recurrence of febrile seizures.I Although diazepam has been the benzodiazepine of choice for status epilepticus, recent evidence indicates that lorazepam may be more beneficial because it provides longer control of seizures and produces less cardiorespiratory depression.
The antianxiety action of benzodiazepines may be a result of their ability to block cortical and limbic arousal following stimulation of the reticular pathways while muscle relaxation properties are mediated by inhibiting both mono-and polysynaptic pathways.
It also can help patients cope with alcohol withdrawal, relax muscles, and treat certain types of seizures (convulsions).

Animal studies show that cyclobenzaprine acts primarily within the central nervous system at brain stem as opposed to spinal cord levels, although it action on the latter may contribute to its overall skeletal muscle relaxant activity.
