The lake is 6.5 kilometres Northeast of the town of Boyle, Alberta along Highway 63.
The lake's name is a translation of the Cree Cheply Sakhahigan which means "place of the skeletons." A Cree chief is buried along the eastern shore of the lake.

We continue to hear that the reason the lake is down is due to the drought OR that this is just a normal cycle the lake is going through.
On August 21 the SLSA sent an email to Boyle warning them that the level of water in their pumphouse reservoir was critically low and that if the lake declines another 6 inches or so they will no longer have sufficient reservoir capacity to be able to draw water from Skeleton Lake.
Skeleton Lake is a unique and valuable resource in Alberta and SLSA is dedicated to returning it to its previous level and sustaining the ecosystem of Skeleton Lake.
