Kind Of Blue, Sketches of Spain and In A Silent Way are three of Miles Davis's finest works, equally recommended whether you are a seadoned jazz fan or simply curious.
Both Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain are presented in their latest remastered state but the version of In A Silent way that is included is an older version with inferior sound.
Sketches of Spain is 1 of 3 collaborations w/ Gil Evans, w/ a different sort of sound, again quite listenable.

Cobb and Jones, with flamenco-flavored percussion, are particularly wonderful here, as they allow the orchestra to indulge in the lushly passionate arrangement Evans provided to accompany Davis, who was clearly at his most challenged here, though he delivers with grace and verve.

Sketches of Spain, Sony, Miles Davis, Gil Evans
Sketches of Spain, though one of Davis's most commercially successful sessions, is also one of his most controversial.
Sketches of Spain, with its emphasis on flamenco, rich orchestrations, and relaxed tempos, is certainly one of Davis's most mellow recordings (he even works out on fluegelhorn), and proved to have broad appeal.
If you like Jazz, Sketches of Spain is magnificent, but I think there is a truer form of Miles Davis rendition than this one.

The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicizing the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral flourishes.
The surreal patina of three flutes and harp, high muted trumpets and woodwinds, and subterranean trombones, French horns and tuba that define one of the main variations on the theme, is a majestic foil for Davis' expressive tones.
SKETCHES OF SPAIN stands alone as one of the pillars of modern music.

In the end, the results more than justified his faith in the score, but it was four more months before he returned to the studio to record the rest of the music for Sketches of Spain.

I don´t know what it is that has made Sketches my all time favorite piece of music, beyond category, even beyond Coltrane, which in my case would be the obvious choice.
Sketches succeeds in placing me spiritually and sensually in a world different from the one I am in when I hear it.
Sketches makes me feel more human, an integral part of the history and evolution of mankind, and the epic story which is human history.

As Dave Liebman says above, Sketches of Spain is his all time favorite piece of music which is a good starting place to explain how eventually he came to perform and record it.
Forever identified with Miles Davis and Gil Evans as the third jewel in their musical necklace (Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess being the other two) fashioned for Columbia Records between 1957 and 1960, it is perhaps the most personal for Davis for what it elicited from him in terms of feeling.
One doesn't have to compare his version of Sketches of Spain with Miles Davis' recording.

But for me Concierto De Aranjuez, which opened Sketches of Spain, has become so Miles that I can't listen to the work performed as Rodrigo intended - with a guitar - and I much prefer the CD to Miles Ahead, which was recorded a little earlier with Gill Evans and the orchestra.
But the trumpet sound on Sketches of Spain - and sometimes Miles "calls" almost like a blues, and the track 'Saeta' is almost a muezzin call to prayer - is just as committed.
Rather than softening the brass so as not to drown out the acoustic guitar, the volume was raised in Davis' rendition and now the powerful solo trumpet carries on a dialog with an occasionally competing, and at other times counterpointal, brass section.

Sketches of Spain (1959) came about during one of Davis’ best and most prolific musical periods.
Sketches of Spain in the end took Davis’ affinity for Spanish music as evidenced in songs like Flamenco Sketches (Kind of Blue) and Blues for Pablo (Miles Ahead) and extended it into a modern jazz concerto.

'Sketches of Spain' is based in part on Spanish compositions, most notably Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aranjuez" and Manuel de Falla's "El Amor Brujo." A small orchestra is conducted by Gil Evans supporting Miles' haunting trumpet sound.
The original release of 'Sketches of Spain' was on the Columbia '6 eye' label, and the earliest pressings have a "deep-groove", meaning that a groove is pressed into the vinyl in the label area, about 1 3/4" around the spindle hole.
I would not personally rank 'Sketches' in the very top drawer of best sounding Miles Davis records, but a good pressing is very good sounding indeed.

Sketches Of Spain by Miles Davis CD
Sketches of Spain was recorded in 1959, just a few months following the recordings for Kind of Blue.
The only deficiencies in the CD are the two alternate takes on Concierto de Aranjuez, but this does illustrate the difficulty level of the score by Gil Evans and the brilliant performance by Miles Davis in the originally released recording of Concierto.
Of lesser importance, the inclusion of Song of Our Country in the CD (also not in the originally released version of Sketches) is at once puzzling - particularly in view of similar spanish-theme collaborations by Miles and Gil in the 1957 recording of Miles Ahead Miles Davis +19.

He had already demonstrated in his "Flamenco Sketches" (Kind Of Blue, CL 1355/CS 8163) and "Blues For Pablo" with Gil Evans (Miles Ahead, CL 1041) a basic affinity with the Spanish musical temperament and sinuous rhythms.
