The realization struck that I don't have to ski the long event, that there are some compelling reasons to ski the half marathon events that are a part of all full length marathons.
While the marathon skiers are shivering at the starting line, you can be deep between the sheets and still have time for a lengthy breakfast, with massive caffeine loading.
It is fun to watch the marathon skiers come through the start area after the first 30 kilometers of the long race, but you can't help feel a little sorry for the unfortunate folks who end up in the midst of the charged up, half marathon start.

The Sapporo International Ski Marathon, a 50 Km Freestyle event, is Japan’s contribution to the Worldloppet series of races.
The Sapporo Marathon is the only Worldloppet race (at least that I’m aware of) that honors visiting racers by giving them a starting area encompassing approximately one half of the front line in the elite wave.
Kilometer 42 of the Sapporo Marathon may be the mother of all Worldloppet climbs.

The annual Ski to Sea Race from Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay can be traced back to the Mt. Baker Marathon held from 1911 to 1913.
The idea for the marathon was developed by the Mt. Baker Club, a group of conservation minded citizens that were attempting to have the North Cascades area designated as part of the National Park System.
The marathon was stopped in 1913 when Vic Galbraith, a cousin of Joe, fell into a crevasse while racing down the glacier.

 Masters World Cup 2008 McCall, Idaho
McCall, Idaho is known as “SKI TOWN USA” for its great snow conditions, and it’s history of being the second oldest winter recreational area in Idaho.
Ski Town, USA got its beginnings during the early 1920’s and 1930’s when Finnish settlers introduced not only cross country skiing to the area, but also ski jumping and alpine skiing.
Additionally, in 1965 Ponderosa State Park was formed and has been providing Nordic ski trails for over 25 years, with over 35,000 Nordic skier visits a year.

I hope everyone is enjoying this great spring skiing.  Don't quit yet!!  Mitch was just out grooming today (Thursday).  He did the entire green trail and reports that it is still in excellent condition.  He groomed the lit blue just for skating.
This is for ALL members.  If this weather holds, we may even be able to ski before supper.
We have just purchased a whole pile of skis, boots and poles.  The skis are waxless, much to the delight of those who use our equipment and hate waxing.
