  Skibo Castle
Skibo Castle is located to the west of Dornoch in Sutherland, Scotland overlooking the Dornoch Firth.
Construction of Skibo Castle was started by Gilbert de Moravia, the Bishop of Caithness around 1186 at Schytherbolle in the southern area of his bishopric.
Skibo Castle remained the residence of subsequent bishops until 1545 when the estate was, as a tactical measure by the church, given to John Gray in order to reinforce its alliance with a powerful family as the threat of Protestant uprising spread towards the north.

In an era in which financial capital was consolidated in New York City, Carnegie famously stayed aloof from the city, preferring to live near his factories in western Pennsylvania and at Skibo Castle, Scotland, which he bought and refurbished.
He acquired Skibo Castle, in Sutherland, Scotland, and made his home partly there and partly in New York; then devoted his life to the work of providing the capital for purposes of public interest, and social and educational advancement.
In all his ideas he was dominated by an intense belief in the future and influence of the English-speaking people, in their democratic government and alliance for the purpose of peace and the abolition of war, and in the progress of education on nonsectarian lines.

 Carnegie's Castle
When British entrepreneur Peter de Savary purchased Skibo (pronounced "Skee-bo") in 1990, his vision was to restore Carnegie's castle and grounds to their former glory as a private club whose members could come and enjoy the style and service of an Edwardian-era sporting estate as houseguests rather than as hotel guests.
While it's something of a fanciful conceit, the Carnegie Club at Skibo is also an upscale example of geotourism, an approach to travel that attempts to sustain and enhance the environment and ecology of places it visits, while also respecting the culture, aesthetics, heritage and well being of the area's residents.
Skibo has that same ambiance, but rather than being able to appreciate the artifacts only from behind a velvet rope, Skibo guests are encouraged to touch, use and enjoy the treasures.

News that Peter de Savary, the entrepreneur who was the face of Skibo Castle, is planning to exchange the heather of the Highlands for the dark sod of Dartmoor, was enough to trigger a ripple of concern among the moneyed classes.
Iain Cameron, a local farmer, who recently sold the castle, described the developer’s plans for the place as "a mini-Skibo", an exclusive country club, an idea that raised concerns among local residents who for generations have enjoyed walks through the property and among the woods at Torr Point.
Skibo Castle, it is hoped, will remain as a haven among the heather for millionaires and billionaires and the new competition thrown up by Taymouth Castle and perhaps to a much lesser extent Aldourie Castle, will serve only to increase Scotland’s reputation as a premier up-market destination.
