The 6,300-acre Pleistocene island is defined by the Wilmington River to the north, Skidaway Narrows to the west, the Vernon River to the south, and Romerly Marsh and Wassaw Island to the east.
Skidaway was no exception, and various northern interests gained control of the island in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography came into existence in the late 1960s due to a donation of 680 acres of land from Robert Roebling and the strong interest from scientists at the University of Georgia in creating an educational arm to study the natural processes of the coast and ocean.

Camp Skidaway was established in the west central sector of the island.
Later Benedictine monks established a monastery and school for the fl children on the island and this was in operation until 1889, when a tidal wave struck the island and ruined the fresh water supply.
The bridge was completed in 1971 and the Skidaway Island State Park was built during the early 1970’s and officially opened in 1975.

If we had more time to visit, I would have chosen to go to the Hunting Island CG or another place because I had read about the rudeness in the RV forum but this was handy for us and we were tired and ready to stop.
When I requested a refund he denied it (a sign clearly stated NO Refunds) then lied to me that he was getting a unit moved out of the space that I was to occupy.
The park claims that they do have a alligator in the park but we have not seen it yet but others we talked to had so be careful.

We tried to make a reservation at Skidaway Island State Park, but because of the St. Patrick's holiday celebration in Savannah, there were no vacancies.
It was easy to park our camper since all RV sites at this park are spacious "pull-thrus." The campground also had a tent section with hookups, an area for primitive camping, 3 nice rental cottages, a playground and a boat ramp for the boys with the big toys.
It was a massive "earthen fort." Our information pamphlet stated that the fort was erected by the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War to protect Savannah, the Ogeechee River, a vital railroad trestle upstream, and rice and cotton plantations bordering the river.

A couple of weeks ago this driver pulled into a beautiful wooded state park (Skidaway Island) near Savannah.
The state park had extra wide sites, water, 30 amp electricity, inexpensive rates and lots of trees.
The trees didn't present a problem for parking, but they were so thick that getting a satellite signal was impossible.
