Prevent Disease.com - Skiers and Snowboarders Need Helmets
Skiers and snowboarders should wear helmets to protect themselves from traumatic brain injuries, according to a new report.
Head injuries account for only a small number of total injuries among skiers and snowboarders, yet they are the number one cause of death and serious injury for people engaged in these sports, according to lead study author Dr. A.
Overall, 1,214 skiers and snowboarders were admitted to the trauma center during the study period, and nearly 30% of them had traumatic head injuries, Levy's team reports in the October issue of The Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection, and Critical Care.

CJNS-Head Injuries in Skiers and Snowboarders in British Columbia
Unfortunately, the ski areas do not record the relative proportion of skiers and snowboarders and thus an estimate of 70% skiers and 30% snowboarders was made by the main resort areas reported in the study for use in the calculation of head injury rates.
A fifth skier, with a high complete cervical cord injury, died after a prolonged stay in hospital when his ventilator was disconnected at his request (he had initially sustained a mild head injury).
All but three (92%) of the injured skiers (including the two patients who suffered fatal head injuries) were able to return home, with only one requiring further inpatient rehabilitation (see Table 4); the three patients who died of nonhead injury related causes were excluded from this analysis.

 Halfbakery: Direction indicators for skiers
Skiers, notably those at the novice end of the scale, are directionally unpredictable to other skiers.
For example, a novice skier who is making a series of turns in a textbook manner will plant a pole in approximately the pivot point of their intended turn.
Granted, an entire piste of skiers wearing these would probably be too confusing, but if limited to those who need them most (and those who are public-spirited enough to allow other skiers this attempt at directional avoidance planning) they could go some way to limiting collisions on busier slopes.

By giving half the trails to snowboarders and half the trails to skiers, skiers and snowboarders would be confined to their own special area.
Then again, trails could be made especially for skiers, and snowboarders, with the traits that best suit the snowboard and the ski.
Many ski resorts have snowboard parks, which are large areas made for snowboarders only, where skiers are not allowed at all.

TAY backcountry skiing: year-round backcountry skiers
Many of these skiers have consecutive months of skiing streaks which have passed 100 months, and one skier is now over 300 consecutive months (that's more than 25 years!).
Skiers differ in how they got started skiing year-round, the criteria they use for what passes as a countable ski trip, how they manage to keep skiing through the low snow season, and the equipment they use, and it can be interesting to read about these.

AMC: Activities - Tuckerman Skiers Earn Their Turns   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Backcountry skiers talk a lot about “earning your turns.” The phrase captures the essence of backcountry skiing, because, without the benefit of ski lifts and snow grooming, you have to climb up the terrain you intend to ski down, and then negotiate your descent, whether through powder, corn, or crud.
Once the climb is made, a skier will click into his or her skis, point them down, and zoom toward the bottom.
Because skiers must hike over the terrain they intend to ski down, they have the opportunity to stop climbing whenever they feel they’ve gone high enough, and begin their descent from there.

Skiers, after all, have proven time and again that we have the grit to stand our ground when it comes down to a fight.
Skiers seem to have an unspoken language, a bond that allows us to cross borders soldiers can't penetrate, even by force.
We seem to have an ability to transcend cultures, brought on by a shared love of sliding on snow, a common connection to nature, and high respect for a mountain geography that can be as deadly as it is serene.
