  Ink Nineteen: King Django
Well, with [Skinnerbox's] "Baby," the original version was recorded in a home studio on an eight-track cassette, and the sound quality wasn't similar to the rest of what was on the record.
Skinnerbox is artistically more fulfilling, for me, because I don't have any limitations on what I can do in that band, albeit the limitations in Stubborn All-Stars are self-imposed.
With Skinnerbox, the challenge is, "are you gonna be good enough to perform the material that you're writing?" Skinnerbox's material is definitely tougher to pull off, it's a lot more experimental, and I think it's a lot more technically demanding in a way.

Long hailed as one of the best bands in the ska scene, Skinnerbox enjoys popularity which far transcends that of the masses of inept bands which play along side them.
On this album, Skinnerbox offers a collection of mediocre songs that sound as if they were recorded on a four track and not mixed or mastered at all.
Skinnerbox seems to be suffering from the same affliction most of its label-mates are--the idea that if a band is on Moon Ska, whatever crap it puts out will be greedily consumed by the scene.

The musicians who make up Skinnerbox: veterans such as vocalist Jeff “King Django” Baker, tenor saxophonist Erkin “El Wood” Husey and Danny Dulin on trumpet — all of whom performed in Stubborn All-Stars — realize this isn’t the correct path ska was meant to take.
The back cover reads, “Thus, this album is more deeply soul-and-skank-laden than many young bands can even conceive of, especially if they’ve got MTV dreams on the brain … And make no mistake, children — this is the way it was always supposed to be done, from the start.”

These eight tunes alone would make a fine album, but Skinnerbox sweeten the pot with an eclectic set of six cover tunes, which further pays testament to their diverse nature.
Skinnerbox's version builds on the reggae feel of the original, adding haunting horns, a ringing glockenspiel, and lush harmonies, achieving what I'd have thought otherwise impossible -- actually improving on a Clash song!

TEMPLE NEWS: Concert Review: Mighty Mighty Bosstones / Skinnerbox   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The streets of Philadelphia were paved with plaid as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones answered the call of a final show at the Trocadero this past Thursday.
Skinnerbox opened with solid set of skankalicious vibes seasoned with a tasteful blend of keyboard tangents and rather impressive guitar licks (that I'm sure, had they been more audible, would've given them a flavor I've yet to hear).
At times they struggled in controlling the tempo, but made up for it with a dangerous invitation of onstage vocal participation from audience members.

One of the originals on the New York ska scene, Skinnerbox was leading the way with a few select other ska bands when nobody was following.
After label troubles forced King Django to put a new Skinnerbox full-length on hold, he decided to get together with the band and collect demos they'd record to release something to help curb fans' appetite for a new Skinnerbox disc.
Not the full-length Skinnerbox was expecting to put out, this collection sounds exactly like what it is -- a collection of demos.
