Ripon is said to have been made a royal borough by Alfred the Great, and in 937, Athelstan is stated to have granted to the monastery sanctuary, freedom from toll and taxes, and the privilege of holding a court, although both charters attributed to him are known to be spurious.
Ripon was summoned to send two members to parliament in 1295, and occasionally from that time until 1328-1329.
Ripon was the first school catchment area in England in which parents voted to keep a selective school in 2000.

Ripon is a small cathedral city in Yorkshire, 214 miles NNW of London, England.
The city had a population of 16,468 at the 2001 census, making it the fourth smallest city in England after Wells, Ely and the City of London (in the rest of the United Kingdom, St David's, Bangor, and Armagh are also smaller).
Ethnically, however, Ripon noticeably lacks diversity, particularly in comparison to towns in West Yorkshire.

David Curry, the son of a teacher, was educated at the Ripon Grammar School where he was head boy in 1962, and then at Corpus Christi College, Oxford where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in modern history in 1966.
Curry was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 1979 for Essex North East, he served in Strasbourg (and Brussels) until 1989.
David Curry was elected to the House of Commons for the very safe Conservative seat of Skipton and Ripon at the 1987 General Election on the retirement of the sitting Conservative MP John Watson.

Dear David Curry MP If you have read recent messages on the Skiptonweb, which I’m sure you do as you are the Member of Parliament for Skipton and Ripon, you will see that most people here are vehemently opposed to fox hunting.
Probally because it affectsalot of livelyhoods in his rural constituency areas,things that matter to some people as opposed to cute foxes being ripped apart.
I'm not sure I have the time or energy to detail here everything I'd like to see happen to the UK countryside over the next few hundred years.
