The American Civil Liberties Union intereceded on the behalf of the NSPA, and the march was permitted to proceed under court order, however, the Nazis failed to march on the appointed day possibly because they did not have enough members to carry through with their intention and because of anti-fascist counterdemonstrations.

 Skokie, IL
Called Niles Center until 1940, Skokie emerged in the mid-1850s at the confluence of two Indian trails, one going north to Gross Point (Gross Point Road), and the other veering westward to what is now Morton Grove (Lin- coln Avenue).
Skokie continued to grow with the completion of the Edens Expressway in 1951, which provided greater access to Chicago; and the Old Orchard Shopping Center, opened in 1956, generated further commercial development in the area.
To commemorate the Holocaust, of which many of Skokie's Jewish residents were survivors, a memorial sculpture was dedicated in the community's village center in 1987.

The "Skokie Swift", as it was dubbed, was a "demonstration project" conducted under the terms of the National Housing Act of 1961 and was to be provided on an experimental basis for a duration of two years beginning in April 1964.

The most striking change was that the service, which was to be recoined the Skokie Swift, was a nonstop shuttle between Howard at the Chicago city limits and Dempster in Skokie, about a mile north of the business district.

The Skokie Swift was originally a demonstration project that utilized the former high speed North Shore tracks from Howard Street to Dempster in Skokie.
Because these were 70 foot cars they could only run on the Swift and only use the number one track at Howard (the western most).
The platforms had to be modified to allow them to drop down when the cars were coming in as they were too wide for the regular CTA platforms.

All that is left is car 1 located at the General Electric plant in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Below is a picture of Car 1 during the summer of 2000 still sporting its CTA made pan trolleys used on the Skokie Swift Line.

The changeover from third rail to overhead catenary used to take place at Maverick station, the last one in the subway; the third rail was extended a few years ago to Airport, where the changeover now takes place.
The Skokie Swift line has only two stations, Howard (connections to the Blue Line 'L') and Dempster; the changeover takes place on the fly midway between the two stations.
I think that this stems from the Skokie Swift's interurban heritage (I believe the line was once part of the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee).

Built as a demonstration project by UMTA, CTA and the Village of Skokie, this line uses a ROW used by an early Chicago Rapid Transit line, as well as part of the Skokie Valley line of the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee.
It is interesting in its' use of third rail at the south end of the line, and an on-the-fly changeover to overhead.
Because of the narrow width of the standard CTA rapid transit equipment, the platforms at the two stations served had to be modified with "flaps" that lowered for the SOAC train.
