The houses on the island were restored by Ronald Lockley using the wood from the wreckage of the Alice Williams.
Some 'traditions' of the island have been upheld over the years, such as the gatherings in the evenings where the lighting is by the mellow, yellow of Tilley lamps hung from the beams.
The water between the mainland and the islands was often treacherous and the boats carrying supplies to the island and produce to the mainland often found the waters difficult to negotiate.

Skomer is the largest of the Pembrokeshire islands and like all the other islands (apart from Caldey Island) is not inhabited, except by wardens and volunteers.
There are extensive wild flowers and seals on the islands, but perhaps most importantly Skomer is a nature reserve of international importance for sea birds; 100,000 pairs of Manx shearwater nest here each summer- in what is thought to be the largest colony of this species globally.
Ramsey Island is also an RSPB reserve, where the unusual geology gives a landscape of rocky hills, with heather, grass fields and cliffs.

It is an island rich in legend dating back to the establishment of early Christian cells or chapels, first in AD 186 by Devanus or St Tyfanog as he was also known, and later by St Justinian.
Skomer Island is separated from the mainland of the Marloes Peninsula by the narrow tidal race of Jack Sound.
Whilst this island has never been inhabited by humans for more than short periods, it is known to have been visited by fishermen for centuries, collecting meat and eggs as well as pursuing their normal activities.

Skomer is probably the most important breeding site of Manx Shearwaters in the world, with an estimated population of 165,000 pairs.
It was this period that links Skomer with Rosemoor, as for some time during the Napoleonic Wars the island (as that of Ramsey was then and for a long time afterwards as well) was leased by John Summers and his descendants, first of Moor, later of Rosemoor in the parish of Walwyn's Castle.
Another important man for Skomer (and one who, like the Summers in their time, made a nice living out of it) was Edward Robinson, who farmed the island from the late 1840's.

An island warden meets each boat and gives a talk about what birds and flowers you are likely to find, then gives you a map of the footpaths.
Toilets are situated in the centre of the island beside the old farmhouse.

The skipper made the decision that he would go to the island and try to drop us off and pick up the people who needed to leave, unfortunately for the others waiting in Martins Haven the weather would preclude day trip visits, just the one journey would be made.
From afar (on Skomer you must stick strictly to the paths to avoid damaging nest burrows that are everywhere bar the footpaths) we scoped some of the ponds that would not be visible from the hides we were heading for.
We headed onwards, from Skomer head was probably the most interesting sighting of the visit; Cathy was watching the gannets from the head with her bins whilst I was about 20 metres further back, sans bins.

After 1970 chicks on Skomer were color-banded on the right leg and those on Skokholm on the left so that the natal colony was known at subsequent sightings.
The four- and five-year-old birds returned even earlier in the breeding season and at least sonhe were present on the island throughout the incubation period; again their departure coincided with the start of fiedging.
A relatively new source of mortality is egg predation by the island's increasing Jackdaw population.

As Skomer Island and surrounding area is a Marine Nature Reserve, there are groundrules which must be observed.
One such rule is that the South side of Skomer Island (from Pains Rock to the Mewstone) is off-limits to divers and boats during the seabird breeding season (March - July).
On the LHS of the haven, the Dale Princess, which ferries people to Skomer Island, has it's embarkation point so this area is out of bounds to divers except at night.

Fluffy white seal pups begin to appear in the coves and caves of Skomer from late August, with peak numbers at the end of September / beginning of October.

The flat top of the island is home to 35,000 pairs of Manx Shearwaters, Storm Petrels, large gull colonies, Wheatears, Oystercatchers, Meadow Pipits and Skylarks, while the 150 ft cliffs hold Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Peregrines and Ravens.
