		Wefald was elected Mayor of Hawley in 1935 and later served as the village attorney (1931-1974).
		He met his wife Emile, a Chinese student from Shanghai, while attending the University of Minnesota (he also attended the University of New Mexico) when he sought out native Chinese students in order to practice conversation in Chinese, which he was studying on a self-teaching basis.

		However, by comparing the names of property owners listed on the plats with records of land transactions, we find that the plats seem to reflect land ownership in Clay County about June 1920.
