If Henry Rollins incarnates all the smoldering hatred and intensity of familyman Charlie Manson, then Sky Saxon — the legendary leader of LA's protopunk Seeds —; is a self-made construct of all the qualities Rollins discarded: drug-addled, hippie mystical, stuck in the '60s, inconsistent and unfocused.
The above discography is a necessarily abbreviated listing of Saxon's activities and does not include most of the countless (and endless) cult chants from his days as a late-'70s Hawaiian guru (pressed in editions of as few as two, some on 8-track tape only) or cult-refugee material (the Alright Family Band).
Fade in the '80s, with Sky now on Psycho, the foremost British acid-casualty label, sandwiched between Deviants reissues and Crystalized Movements freakouts.

Sky's trademark nasal whine has lost a bit of its edge but he still moved around the stage with the energy of a much younger man (amazing how acid can preserve a body).
Saxon's backing band of next-generation Seeds proved loose, relaxed, and much better than competent, summoning forth that classic, dense "web of sound" that made the Seeds the best of the Nuggets-era garage rockers: big, tumbling, primitive rhythms embroidered with wonky, warbling organ riffs and wannabe Stones blues guitar riffs.
All were utterly captivated by both the energy and the spectacle of the Seeds, whose performance admirably demonstrated why the music of the '60s continues to hold us in such thrall, more than three decades later.

Led by the enigmatic Sky Saxon, the Seeds first single "Pushin' Too Hard" cracked the Top 40 in 1967 and they quickly followed it with the release of "Can't Seem to Make You Mine".
By the seventies the Seeds were gone, but not before releasing three albums of raging psychedelic garage rock and becoming one of the most influential and legendary of the American garage scene.
Beyond the Seeds' trademark sneering, snarling blues-rock workouts, Saxon also delves into stranger and more psychedelic moods, from the erotically charged epic incantation "Up in Her Room" to the poignant childhood reverie "A Faded Picture" to the inexorable heartache of the oft-covered "Can't Seem To Make You Mine." All hail the king.
