Sky islands are mountains in ranges isolated by valleys in which other ecosystems are located.
The best known examples of sky islands are the Madrean sky islands at the northern end of the Sierra Madre Occidental in New Mexico, Arizona, Chihuahua and Sonora on the United States-Mexico border.
Other sky islands of note are the Great Basin montane forests of the United States' Great Basin, the Tepuis of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana, and in Africa.

The "sky islands" of Arizona and New Mexico in the southwestern United States form a unique complex of about 27 mountain ranges whose boundaries, at their lowest elevation, are desert scrub, grasslands, or oak woodlands (Figs.
Nevertheless, the cross-border management of sky islands is important for such tasks as reintroduction of the Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi), maintenance of disjunct populations of rare plant species, and migration of the Mexican pronghorn (Antilocarpa americana mexicana), if it still occurs.
The sky islands are the most diverse U.S. area for mammals; some 90 native mammals inhabit the area from the chaparral community to higher elevations; at least 6 are endemic subspecies.

 Sky Islands
These islands are often widely separated from each other by many miles of dry and hot desert with many species of cactus and arid adapted plants.
The islands themselves, rising to nine or 10 thousand feet, are wetter, cooler, and have lush vegetation zones from oak and juniper up through pines, to fir and sometimes spruce at the top.
Because each island is ecologically isolated, some species cannot easily move from one island to another (for example plants, lizards, non-flying insects, and small mammals).

In fact, many Sky Island ranges are home to species that exist nowhere else on the planet, such as the endangered and endemic Mount Graham red squirrel.
Today, most native predators have been hunted to the brink of extinction and logging, grazing, road-building, and other forms of habitat fragmentation have taken their toll (although a Jaguar was recently sighted in Southern Arizona!).
The planned UA telescope project on Mount Graham threatens the spruce-fir forest atop this highest Sky Island range (the Pinaleños) by building roads, cutting down ancient trees, and further impacting an area dangerously out of ecological balance due to decades of grazing, fire supression, and other human impact.
