Interview With Robert Szeleney, SkyOS's Project Leader - OSNews.com
SkyOS is a home brewed operating system, created by Robert Szeleney in the last few years as a hobby project.
As SkyOS gets bigger and more advanced, its popularity and importance are also growing, driving the 3-member team to add more and more functionality.
Robert Szeleney: Because SkyOS has a realtime scheduler and a really good interrupt latency, it could be possible to use SkyOS as a realtime operating system or as a visualization platform.

SkyOS was open source in its early stages, but is now proprietary.
SkyOS is mostly POSIX compliant, and comes with the majority of the GNU tools, including GCC.
SkyOS has applications for many common desktop computing tasks: the GTK, Mozilla, and Mono platforms have been ported, to name a few of the more prominent applications available.

SkyOS:5.0 - ClassicBeta   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Although SkyOS has good support for most graphics cards in 2D accelerated or VESA modes, it lacks the ability to take advantage of the 3D hardware found on modern graphics cards like nVidia's GeForce and ATI's Radeon range; although 3D software rendering is supported, it is considerably slower when compared to hardware accelerated 3D.
The SkyOS developers have asked ATi and nVidia to consider writing 3D accelerated drivers or releasing specifications so that drivers may be written; but at this stage neither company considers SkyOS to have enough marketshare for that to be financially viable.
SkyOS is targetted by a lot of doubters for possible GPL violations.

 Bits & Bytes -- SkyOS
I am a beta-tester for v5.0 of SkyOS: an operating system that is being privately developed by Robert Szeleney with the support of a handful of volunteers.
My interest in SkyOS is initially focused on programming tools and the development of a C++ class framework.
Tried to load Beta 8.3 of SkyOS under VMWare 4, and it fails miserably: the VESA driver is throwing fatal errors in the VMWare video subsystem, so for now I'm stuck.

SkyOS an OS built from scratch - Wilders Security Forums
SkyOS is an operating system written from scratch.
SkyOS was created in 1996 by Robert Szeleney as a small bootloader.
In the past 8 years, SkyOS has evolved into a full-featured, modern operating system, with a goal to be the easiest to use desktop operating system available for the average computer user.

The graphical user interface of SkyOS (SkyGI) is very flexible and powerful.
SkyOS has been in beta for an extremely long time (several years) and to get it you must register and pay them 30 USD for a download copy.
This has been criticized because to many, SkyOS will never be finished, and the goals of it being free may never be met.

Talk:SkyOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We can say it because SkyOS does- it has nowhere near the umpteen-thousand suites/programs that distros such as Debian, Gentoo, or other OSs like the Mac's or Windows- and that is not counting emulators and such which allow one OS to steal another's libraries (I'm thinking WINE here...).
SkyOS does NOT have reduced performance on Nvidia and ATI hardware, as far as the desktop is concerned.
I'm happy to explain the reasons why SkyOS has limited driver support, so long as the statement is made that is does indeed have limited support, and the reasons why that is so remain non-emotively stated so they don't read like a rant against nVidia (which has legitimate business reasons for not releasing specs).

 SkyOS Developers Interview
Since the 3.x versions, SkyOS has become strong enough to actually start being considered a possible desktop alternative; not to say that it was an alternative, just that the possibility was there.

 SkyOS 5.0 Beta Exclusive Preview
SkyOS serves as a reminder to GUI developers that the current status quo will only suffice for so long.
Once finalized, SkyOS 5.0 will be free as with previous releases, but the developers needed to cover expenses for supporting the beta test program, thus the small fee.
Understandably, SkyOS lacks a wealth of hardware support, as evidenced here.  Nearly all VMware options are supported, plus it should prove easily enough to obtain hardware presented on the compatibility list.

My thoughts are that the SkyOS communicates to all of the hardware components through an object-oriented messaging and framework.
Then the SkyOS retrieves the new operating and performance characteristics from the engine and loads them into's its own framework.
As long as the company has created the engine, digital certificates for software security and supplied the minimum attributes for the SkyOS to talk to the engine then the Skycar should be ready to go.
