The emigrants on board the Hercules are from the islands of Skye, North Uist, and Harris.
They were brought from those islands in the Celt steamboat, hired by the society for their accommodation, the season being too far advanced-too cold and boisterous-to admit of their being exposed without hazard to their health on the decks of the steamboats that ply to those distant islands.

Story has it that in the early 1700th century, amongst the survivors of a Spanish shipwreck off the coast of the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides, were Maltese type dogs that then mated with local terriers to produce this unique new breed.
Originating in the isolation of the Western Islands of Scotland, this hardy little breed was developed to hunt foxes and otters in the rocky, bleak terrain of those areas.
In summary these are not a common breed in Australia now though I have seen them in Perth and there appear to be viable clubs in Victoria and South Australia.
