skyscraper - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about skyscraper
The towering skyscrapers of the central district, Hong Kong.
Skyscrapers are now found in cities throughout the world.
Chicago has many of the earliest skyscrapers, such as the Home Insurance Building 1883–85, which was built ten storeys high with an iron and steel frame.

"Skyscraper has finally released its debut album, which was locked in some drawer for a long while and that now is on its way to putting this band on the place it deserves to be.
One of the outstanding aspects of this album is that the band managed to put a good touch of originality on its songs.
This album has all it takes to put Skyscraper in the elite of Brazilian metal and is a serious candidate to 'album of the year'.

 Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
There's no denying that this album is something new and different, an unusually seamless fusion of dance and more conventional rock ingredients, all skilfully mixed together and stylishly served.
The source of this renewed inspiration is undoubtedly the change in lineup where Hyde and Smith, tired with the conventional group arrangement, shed the last few remaining Freur/Underworld members and recruited DJ of the moment Darren Emerson.
Overall, this is an exceptional album, although I'd stop short of hailing it as some sort of new musical messiah as the UK music press have.

Waiting multiple years for a musician to release a new album can be pretty strenuous, especially when everything they do release tends to stay in your stereo for an extended period of time.
This is the kind of album that's only viable when you have a decent fanbase, so I think it’s safe to say when someone releases a live album they have "established" themselves.
The album art is the icing on the cake for me; a classic revolving lamp that's a staple of most, if not all, Hayden shows.

 e.Peak (7/1/2002) arts: seedy reviews
Skyscraper is reminiscent of Dresser's earlier recorded efforts, consisting entirely of beautifully stripped-down acoustic songs.
The standout track on the album is "Dynamite Walls," an amazing effort about driving the highway between B.C. and Alberta: "High beams showing/falling rock warning/ and construction work slowing/The engine blazes/the elevation raises/and the dynamite walls contain us." "Bass Song" is a simple two-minute track that is as deep as it is funny.
This album was conceptualised and recorded while the band was working on another project - an album comprised of the many Garbage B-sides and remixes, but inspiration hit and instead of old stuff we get this.

This record is the soundtrack to living in the city, but escaping on a regular basis from the people that populate it.
Skyscraper never assumes it's anything more than a house performance for a small group of friends.

Gerry Mitchell and Little Sparta - Scalpel Slice : album review
"Skyscraper housebound, to what kind of reality are you bound?" asks Mitchell, and the music punctuates the question well - which is good, because for the rest of the album the music seems to work against - not for - the poetry.
With the best poetry-to-music albums, it's the words that dictate the rhythm and flow of the music, which is there to serve the poetry at all times.
William Burroughs' legendary album with Michael Franti's Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy is the perfect example of this - you returned from the first listen knowing that you'd heard some great music but with a head chock-full of Burroughs' startling stories.

Hot Water Music is one of those bands that have been churning out album upon album of quality material for a number of years now (consistently backed by a tremendous work ethic), without ever really earning the support they truly deserve.
Caution is the sort of album that could change all of that, as it is one of the tightest, most focused, and nearly perfect efforts the band has offered up thus far.
Even if you hear this album and manage not to enjoy it, you won’t be able to deny the fact that it is a damn solid effort.

Hayden: Skyscraper National Park: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The album, recorded on a four-track at his parent's house, was notable for its contrast of wistful tenderness and snarling anger, and of course, Hayden's striking baritone.
Instead, the album is marked by frequent reliance on a simple falsetto.
Hayden closes the album nicely with "Lullaby," less melody-focused than the rest of the album, and more akin to the mood music of such slow-core stalwarts as Low and Idaho.

Skyscraper National Park | The A.V. Club
Skyscraper National Park offers 40 minutes of classic Hayden: mumbly, earnest, sometimes-dissonant ballads in the DIY roots-rock mode shared by fellow travelers Palace, Smog, and Varnaline.
Hayden hews to the indie aesthetic of eclecticism, personality, and rawness that was still in vogue when he last recorded, though those values have been in decline since the dawn of the 2000s.
Skyscraper National Park is a heartening throwback to the days when offbeat influences were absorbed and recontextualized through artists' sensibilities, not presented as an end in themselves (or worse, dropped altogether).

To be honest, this album is more for Steve Vai fans, as his guitar work dominates every single track on this album.
David Lee Roth's second major solo album, Skyscraper, gets a clean start out of the gate, setting a good steady pace through the first two songs, Knucklebones and Living in Paradise, stumbles a little with The Bottom Line, then goes splaying head first into the dirt courtesy of the inferior title track.
Skyscraper is just a bad song, and the fact that it is cluttered with far too many voice distortions, echoes, and other silly tech tricks doesn't do anything to hide its faults.

His previous albums, Everything I Long For and The Closer I Get garnered him "vital" status by the tastemakers at Spin and his contribution of the title track to Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge cemented his cult following.
Skyscraper National Park occupies a diverse landscape: raw and bleak; yet warm and bright at once.
From a high falsetto to a low growl, from a distant piano and thin guitar to lush strings and horns, Hayden traverses the span of wide-open spaces to solitary introspection.

With exceptions (and recognition of Quebec as a separate country…’tis the season!) Canada’s great white hopes generally find themselves lost in the middle of the road, which is exactly where they seem to prosper.
And in spite of the fact that Skyscraper National Park does not mark any dramatic change in his songwriting or arranging, it manages to please far more than any of his past releases.
While Skyscraper National Park is by no means dissident, it is considerably less commercially poppy than any of his previous releases.

Maybe it the fact that the dark atmospheric folk songs of Skyscraper National Park sound like they were recorded on the back porch of a log cabin in Northern Canada.
The epic "Dynamite Walls" is but the second song on the album and, while gorgeous, seems to weigh down the rest of the record.
With the first 12 minutes of this nearly 40-minute album belonging to the first two songs, one can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by the one-two punch at the beginning, or feel that the rest of the album seems a bit skimpy.

Hayden - Skyscraper National Park (Hardwood)
Look at his debut album, Everything I Long For, a combination of fucked-up story songs ("Skates," "Driveway") and morose ballads ("My Parents House," "Hardly")--all mixed in with hardcore-inspired crunchy numbers and screaming.
The album closer is also magnificent in its simplicity and beauty.
While Skyscraper National Park is not a perfect album, there are no truly bad songs, which, in itself, is a feat, and there’s a mood prevalent throughout the whole thing.

The Underworld hits compilation 1992-2002 is a release worthy of their legacy, a collection that refuses to give short shrift to one of the decade's most important acts.
1992-2002 suffers only in comparison to Underworld's excellent proper albums (Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest in the Infants, Beaucoup Fish), the best of which were definitive examples of energy and pacing.
It will also come as too much for listeners who want only a brief collection including the gist of the group; extended versions of Underworld singles (most of which approach the ten-minute mark) weren't originally meant to be heard start-to-finish, one after another.

Fans are split on David Lee Roth's second studio album "Skyscraper." Released in the spring of 1988, the album was a top-ten hit, platinum smash, and yielded the hit "Just like Paradise." Unfortunately for Dave, however, "Skyscraper" saw Dave lose a lot of fans.
The album takes a complete left turn for the album's avant-garde title track "Skyscraper." Although many fans and critics don't get it and label it "bizarre," this is one of Dave's most creative, ambitious, and intriguing songs.
"Skyscraper" is experimental David Lee Roth ala Steve Vai, where Eat 'Em And Smile sounds like a DLR album, Skyscraper sounds like a Steve Vai album with DLR singing on it as a guest artist.
