If you're a fan of Warhammer 40,000, as a collector's item, the answer is yes - it gives a wonderful view of the roots of WH40K, and there's a lot of possibility here - something that I felt was missing from the 2nd and 3rd edition of WH40K.

New warhammer stuff pretty much say explicitly that the slann and the old ones are separate entities.
They travelled between the stars using interdimensional gateways, and, yes, they are credited with building the warpgate that collapsed on Warhammer's north pole, and all the other things that today are blamed on the Old Ones.
The fact that there is now talk of the Slann being one of the engineered races of the Old Ones thus seems to be a result of Games Workshop's inability to keep consistency in their universes.

A running joke among critics of the game is that "It's called Warhammer '40K' because that's how much money you'll spend on it." New players wishing to start playing should expect to spend upwards of $200-300 US dollars for a reasonably sized army (1000-2000 points worth of models), including costs for rulebooks and paints.
As of January 2005, only the Space Marines codex had been updated to fourth edition, though errata for other codices are available.

Warhammer Fantasy is a much better system than Warhammer 40,000.
In Warhammer 40,000, I've found that it takes about 10 minutes to move a 10- or 20-member squad arround the map.
But in Warhammer 40,000, the game deteriorates into a mosh pit of terminators and space maries vs. a few simple goffs (space orks) who are pathetic little creatures in comparision.
