Slang is an album by British hard rock band Def Leppard, released in 1996 (see 1996 in music).
Slang is sometimes confused with jargon which is the collection of vocabulary specific to a profession: medical terminology for example.
Examples of rhyming slang are: 'apples and pears' for 'stairs' and 'trouble and strife' for 'wife.' An example of truncation and replacement of rhyming slang is bottle and glass for arse.

 Slang
Slang is the non-standard use of words in a language and sometimes the creation of new words or importation of words from another language.
With the growth of text messaging, slang terms have even adopted commonly used spellings which do not conform to the rules of formal language; thus what a youth of the 1960s might have called groovy, a youth of 2002 might call "phat", both verbally and in text messages.
Slang is often the dissemination of jargon from a specific profession or recreation to the general public.

Slang by DEF LEPPARD (lyrics & reviews)
Why they chose Slang as the title track eludes me as it is easily the worst song on the album.
But whereas those albums were strictly geared towards escapist entertainment, "Slang" is the only example of Def Leppard's music that actually touched upon genuine artistry.
The first track "Truth" of the album proves that they are on to something different by with an industrial scratch-drum as the main beat.

Obviously, in 1996, when this album was released, Leppard was extremely 'uncool', with their previous effort, the contrived 1991 effort 'Adrenalize', only giving the grunge movement fodder to go against.
For the most part, Slang sounds like a whole new Leppard, and the beginnings of sounds and musical territories that could have, and SHOULD have been seriously explored in future works, instead of returning to pop-metal (albiet decent pop-metal) with 1999's Adrenalize and the newly-released 'X'.
'Slang', the song, is, according to the Leps themselves, the most 'Leppard-sounding' song on the album, and I must agree.

On Slang the band tried to propel themselves too far into a direction that fans didn't were not comfortable with.
This is not Hysteria 2002 or Slang 2002 - this is Def Leppard 2002.
The first half of the album is the more laid back and best half, while the second half picks up the tempo with some more traditional Leppard rock n roll moments, but maybe isn't quite as strong.

It definitely wasn't the case that the album was bad, since lots of articles in magazines were positive about it.
And finally, some versions of "Slang" are accompanied by a 6-track CD with an acoustic performance in Singapore.
For "Slang", the reason was that the lyrics had a much more deeper meaning than what they used to write about, and (according to Joe Elliott), "the lyrics were written like that because they look good on paper".

 CD Baby: SLANG: Blue
This is a very strong album and the way it kicks off with the authoritative and contagious "The Wind of Your Dreams," it sets the precedence for the entire album.
I did not hear a track on this album that was a throwaway; they all had their own character and appealing sound that allows each member of the band a chance to prove why they are candidates for a major league contract either as a band or individually.
The technical aspects of producing a solid album such as this are paramount and I must say I think they really nailed it down on this session because it sparkles.

When about half a year ago 'Slang', the sixth studioalbum of Def Leppard (The special 'Retro Active' and the VERZAMELAAR 'Vault' excluded), was released it was very obvious that these Brittish were looking for a sound for the nineties.
The wait for a new Def Leppard album is definitly a timeconsuming thing and there has been a great deal of work on the -more or less- predictable sound on 'Slang'.
In essence 'Slang' doesn't differ that much in comparison with 'Adrenalize', it is still a Def Leppard album of course.

obviously slang showed that the boys are capable of writing more substantial lyrics, but i still look at that album as a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the grunge years.
of course, after slang failed they remade hysteria (again) and the new album is the least challenging thing they've ever done, both musically and lyrically.

Def Leppard quickly moved from the accoustic and organic frame which the previous Retro Active album created; allowing the seeds to be planted for the Slang album.
The masterpiece of this album though, "Pearl of Euphoria" is an almost 7 minute journey of Jim Morrison meets an agressive and angry Def Leppard vibe which reminds one of what happens when the band writes on pure emotion and vibe.

It was spooky how with Adrenalize, an album that debutted at No. 1 on Billboard charts, was welcomed openly but with Slang, Leppard lost their charm over the public.
Slang is not a “dreaded” album because of the songs on it, it is more like the Leps attitude since that album has turned Leppard onto a dead end road.
Before Slang, this band relied on their own instincts, but since Slang it seems that they have looked to others with a track record to show them which direction to follow.

The fact this album is better overall musically then many of the grunge bands shows that grunge is a fad, and will eventually die out, leaving the really talented bands in place progressively developing their own music.

The album highlights the extraordinary potency of the songs, that were mostly written to be covered by other artists.
The band were invited to perform a live soundtrack in San Francisco to F.W.Murnau’s classic film ‘Sunrise’ in the spring of 2003, and this enabled front man Kurt Wagner to select a total of thirty six songs from a “buttload” of music accumulated between the summer of 2002 and the spring of 2003.
The single is followed-up next week by the release of the band’s eponymous debut album which mixes up 70’s funk and soul, a solid amount of early 90’s indie rock, organic hip-hop beats and syncopated lyrical exploration.

 Slang by Def Leppard CD
With '80s hard rock all but dead and gone by the mid-'90s, Def Leppard rethought their approach and resurfaced with 1996's SLANG.
The indulgences that rocketed Leppard to the top of the charts a decade earlier were stripped away as the veteran band attempted to stay in step with the new alternative rock acts.
While SLANG didn't hit the charts as hard as such past classics as PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA, it contained its share of highlights, namely "Work it Out," "All I Want is Everything," and "Blood Runs Cold." The group would revisit their original sound with their next release, 1999's EUPHORIA.
