In ((often plural) systems used in transmitting messages over a distance electronically) telecommunication, slant range is the line-of-sight distance between two points, not at the same level relative to a specific datum.
The slant range is the hypotenuse of the triangle represented by the altitude of the airplane and the distance between the radar antenna and the airplane's ground track (the point on the Earth at which it is directly overhead).
In the absence of altitude (A message received and understood) information, the aircraft location would be plotted farther from the antenna than its actual ground (A bar or bars of rolled steel making a track along which vehicles can roll) track.

At the radar antenna, the angle between a horizontal plane (essentially, parallel to a level surface) and a given slant range direction is called the depression angle β (beta) for any point along that directional line (a mnemonic for that is "lowering your head down from staring forward when depressed").
This range resolution is effectively the minimum distance between two reflecting points along the azimuthal direction that the radar can identify as separate, at that range.
This range resolution (effectively, the minimum distance between two reflecting points along the look direction at that range at which these may be sensed as separate and distinct) gets poorer outward for a specific pulse duration.

The objective of the VAD algorithm is to sample radial velocities in a circle about the radar at constant elevation and slant range where the combined beam elevation and slant range intersect a desired reporting altitude.
The only cautions currently provided by OSF regarding the algorithm are that the use of very short slant ranges may acquire radial velocity samples contaminated by ground clutter and that Doppler resolution inherently decreases with range.
This is what the "optimum" part of "optimum slant range" is all about, and leaving this element permanently assigned to the 88D's default settings can frequently lead to VWP products which seem curiously unrepresentative or innaccurate.
