 Rough Edge: Slapshot CD Reviews
Yes, this is a greatest hits collection and, yes, this Boston band has been recording since the early 80s, but "Greatest Hits, Slashes and Crosschecks" is a compilation of new recordings of their most popular songs.
Also included are a collection of flyers for the band's various performances, extensive liner notes and a link to their official website (which you can also visit just by clicking here http://www.oldtimehardcore.com).
Despite the fact that Slapshot pride themselves on their hardcore sound (their website, after all, is www.oldtimehardcore.com), their music has a decidedly punk attitude and style to it.

According to a source close to the situation, band management is in the process of hiring an entirely new lineup for Slipknot so that the current band members can concentrate on other projects, keeping the Slipknot machine rolling in the process.
The band’s record company has come up with a plan to drop the last album onto reel-to-reel tape, cut the tape into small strips, throw them into the air, tape them back together, and release the result as the next Slipknot disk.
Critics who have seen and heard the band have made comparisons to the current popular kiddy band The Wiggles, and in fact, members of the Aussie quartet have been critical of NotSlipknot for “borrowing” from their act.

Slapshot, who take their name from the Paul Newman movie and who've thrown in a lot of inspirational dialogue from the film as well, were first introduced to me by one Melmo Biffenheimer a long time ago.
Anyway, Slapshot was introduced as a Boston straightedge skinhead band to me, and that meant whatever it meant back around 1989.
Judging from the lyrics, I would bet there's an upheaval in the world of Slapshot, as all the songs are about either reclaiming the HC title or giving a history lesson to those who don't' know what's up.

DYS was a straight edge hardcore punk band from Boston, Massachusetts, and part of the notorious Boston Hardcore Crew along with contemporaries such as SSD and Negative FX.
They released two LPs: Brotherhood, an album still held in high regard by fans of hardcore music, and DYS (i.e., self-titled), an album that is more a hard rock or heavy metal album than a hardcore album.
Co-founder and bassist Jonathan Anastas became a founding member of Slapshot, writing, recording and touring behind their debut album "Back on the Map" before leaving the music business for a career in advertising and marketing.

SLAPSHOT is a band shrouded in history, rumors, and urban legend.
Very few bands have left such a mark that generation after generation of hardcore kids find it incumbent upon themselves to discover SLAPSHOT fresh and new for themselves to give them a foundation for their listening development.
Unapologetically straight forward, speed-reliant hardcore that won't give metal the time of day and leaves punk lying in the dust, SLAPSHOT continues to be nothing but the most pure version of hardcore there is. Their straight edge branding is also unwavering and consistent.

I would be a liar if I said that Slapshot has been my favourite hardcore band of all times, but this Boston hardcore band deserves respect for always having gone their own way without caring for trends.
I confess: I never really listened to their old stuff, and I am not a Slapshot expert to analyse the contents of this CD, but it is a well listenable compilation of hatred filled hardcore that could give a shit about anything most people care about...
So 22 songs, an album title which is referring, of course, to ice hockey, and a slight feeling of sadness for one of the last true bands to have gone to be replaced with a multitude of hardcore clones or clowns.

Judge was one of the first New York City bands to add a thick, metallic guitar crunch to the by then standard manic, angst-ridden, and ragged neo-punk sound of the mid- to late-'80s underground hardcore scene.
Mike "Judge" Ferraro's personalized, abrasive yet introspective sensitive tough-guy approach to fronting the band created a legacy that endures in the hearts of hardcore kids around the world (many of whom sport Judge tattoos) despite the fact that the group disbanded in the early '90s.

The band is in a difficult situation since basically there is nothing wrong with their material as the sounds are pretty good and the musicianship is solid, but since the songs don't really arouse any stronger feelings they kind of fall in between.

 Dinosaur Jr. Album Reviews
Their overall sound is certainly not your average rock sound (but that seems to be the case with all these seminal 80’s guitar bands), as introvert passages are often disrupted by shards of feedback, and both the vocalists are quite ‘limited’, especially Mascis, with his lazy out of tune-delivery and whining sound.
Elsewhere, the band covers more familiar and digestible folk rock material: “Kracked,” for instance, has a catchy guitar melody, quite accessible verses (“Come on baaaaaabe!”), but of course the hit potential is immediately ruined by another guitar freak-out.
That the band does not wish to infuse each track with deafening guitar sounds is proven by the inclusion of the near-cute “Pond Song” that nevertheless boasts some steady drumming, an electric/acoustic chorus and some wistful lyrics.

Richmond does us all a favor by avoiding coming across as a Strokes-wannabe, even though the two songs that got the band their record deal, "New Taste" and "Stratosphere," both are indelibly marked with what is now known as the "Strokes sound".
The young band hasn't fully found their voice yet-almost every song recalls an influence rather than stakes a claim for a signature sound of their own-but the album's best moments point toward both a promising future and a satisfying present.
